A brief intro
Plymouth Argyle head into this fixture after a fantastic giant killing win against Bristol City, knocking last season’s semi-finalists out of the League Cup, but a slightly disappointing start to the League One campaign following a draw against Southend and a loss against Wycombe. With what looks like a packed end-of-August schedule, drawing Millwall in the cup’s second round, Derek Adams will be looking to get a bit of good form up and running before it’s too late! Perhaps star of the season so far, with his MOTM performance at Bristol supplementing his good display against Southend, Yann Songo’o will doubtless hope to notch again and double his goal tally
As for newly promoted Coventry, they’ve had an incredibly similar start to Argyle with a point from their opening two games. With just one goal in the two games they’ve played, Coventry will be looking to add to the scoresheet more and try and tighten up at the back too. After an incredible, long-running series of bad form, they finally gained their first top six finish in any league in over 40 years and the first promotion that many of their fans will have experienced. I’m sure they will be looking for a consolidation season perhaps with the idea of pushing on if possible.
Both clubs with a rich football league history, the first time these two clubs met was 110 years ago. Argyle were 2-1 victors
Argyle haven’t won against Coventry in their last three tries, their last win coming back in 2009
Between 1909 and 1911, the clubs met six times with a total of 33 goals going in
Coventry (4-4-2): O’Brien, Sterling, Davies, Hyam, Mason, Doyle, Ogogo, Bayliss, Hiwula-Mayifuila, Andreu, Bakayoko
Argyle: (4-3-2-1): Macey, Moore, Edwards, Canavan, Smith-Brown, Songo’o, Ness, C Grant, Lameiras, Taylor, Carey.
I am anticipating a fairly bog-standard match. Hopefully ,Argyle can show a bit more oomph in the midfield with the front three left isolated in recent weeks, but Coventry will be looking to regain the strength in defence that got them into League one, so it could end up as a vaguely boring game. I’ll say 1-0 Argyle.
