Plymouth Argyle manager Ryan Lowe praised Jose Baxter after his first start in green against Reading, hinting he might start against his former club Oldham this weekend.

Speaking of the summer signing, Lowe said: “You are obviously cautious will he go out and perform, will he go out and try too hard?” Jose is the type of kid that won’t look into it, he had some great times there but now he’s an Argyle player, he loves being here and he’s performing.”

“It depends what type of game it is, when he played against Reading, he was by far one of the best players, up against a top-quality player in Charlie Adam, there’s loads of factors, I just look at the best team to pick and if Jose Baxter is in that team then he’ll be picked.”

Lowe also spoke positively about the depth in his squad after fellow new-signing George Cooper made his full debut against Bristol Rovers in the EFL Trophy earlier this week. Lowe said: “George is a terrific player, he’s nowhere near fitness, but we knew we could get 90 minutes out him, especially playing left wing-back”.

“He was a little bit stiff yesterday and today, bless him, but he’s got to get through that stiffness period to get up to match speed. When he gets up to match speed, he’s going to be a good quality player who adds to the depth of the squad.”
