Rumour: Celtic in for Tolaj

20/01/26

Rumour: Scottish Premiership side Celtic are keen to sign Plymouth Argyle’s Lorent Tolaj

Age: 24

Position: Striker

This season: 16 goals and 4 assists in 29 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: I wasn’t going to give this one the time of day initially, but I’ve seen it spread on social media and it needs to be shot down. Plymouth Argyle’s Lorent Tolaj has today been linked with a move to Celtic, but I can see no possibility of it happening.

Let’s make one thing clear: Tolaj is not eligible to play for Celtic this season. Because he’s already played for Argyle and Port Vale, FIFA rules prohibit him from playing for a third club. Celtic could sign him in theory, but he’d be barred from playing again until at least May unless they loaned him straight back to Argyle, or indeed Port Vale.

This rumour appears to have stemmed from a Twitter account by the name of “All Things Celtic.” They claim Celtic are keen to pursue Tolaj after a recruitment meeting with interim manager Martin O’Neill. Given the nature of O’Neill’s employment, Tolaj would almost certainly not be able to play whilst he is manager, so this suggestion is clearly preposterous.

Celtic may sign Tolaj eventually, and they’d certainly be eligible in the summer. Technically, they could sign him now and wait until next season to play him. But that clearly wouldn’t be in their best interests, and this source is clearly making things up.

Youth loan: Zak Baker

16/01/26

Goalkeeper Zak Baker has joined Plymouth Parkway on a three-month loan deal.

The 21-year-old hasn’t made a first team appearance this season. That was despite Conor Hazard’s injury earlier in the campaign. Luca Ashby-Hammond filled in, even in the cup competitions, and from there Baker’s place in the pecking order was clear. It has remained the case, so a loan move clearly makes sense.

Baker spent time at Parkway last season too, and will be reunited with old teammates at Bolitho Park.

Confirmed: Mumba joins Huddersfield

15/01/26

Plymouth Argyle have this morning announced that Bali Mumba has departed the club. The 24-year-old has joined Huddersfield Town on a permanent deal, for a fee believed to be around £1 million. It is rumoured that the £1 million figure will only be reached if certain add-on conditions are met.

Mumba first joined Argyle as a loanee from Norwich City in the 2022/23 season, and played an integral role as the Pilgrims won the League One title. He joined permanently after that, but hasn’t really hit the same heights since, hampered slightly by being required to play in multiple positions ever since.

Upon Mumba’s departure, director of football Derek Adams said “Bali has been an incredible servant to the football club, forming an integral part of the side who clinched the League One title with 101 points. He expressed a desire to move on to the next stage of his career, and the club would never stand in his way after all his contributions to Argyle over the years.”

Reactions to the news have been mixed. There is an impression that the move suits all parties; Mumba will get the opportunity to play in his favoured left wing back position at Huddersfield, whilst Argyle will have lowered their wage bill, and had the opportunity to find a replacement (in Ronan Curtis) who perhaps fits the current formation better.

However, there must be an element of regret. Mumba’s signing in the summer of 2023 appeared to be a bargain at the time, and the four-year contract ought to have seen Mumba develop more as a player and generate significant resale value. To sell him in these circumstances feels like an almighty opportunity missed.

Update: Mumba set for Huddersfield medical

13/01/26

Rumour: Bali Mumba is set to have a medical at Huddersfield Town tomorrow

Age: 24

Position: Left wing back

This season: 4 assists in 30 appearances

Source: Plymouth Live

Verdict: After over three years of service, it really does appear that Bali Mumba’s time at Plymouth Argyle is coming to an end.

Since reports initially broke through Football League World today, several journalists have confirmed that Mumba’s move to Huddersfield Town is progressing at pace. The most notable of those is Chris Errington, who has now suggested that Mumba is set to have a medical with Huddersfield tomorrow. Errington mentioned that “The clubs have agreed a fee in the region of £1 million for the 24-year-old.”

This rumour has taken exactly the same trajectory as Ronan Curtis’ move to Home Park. Football League World broke the story first, and we had the closest thing to confirmation when Errington posted his article a little later on. Given the Curtis deal was eventually announced, I think we can conclude Mumba’s move is now imminent.

Rumour: Huddersfield keen on Mumba

13/01/26

Rumour: Huddersfield Town have opened talks to sign Plymouth Argyle’s Bali Mumba

Age: 24

Position: Left wing back

This season: 4 assists in 30 appearances

Source: Football League World

Verdict: After a few rumours of potential incomings at Home Park, and indeed the first signing of the window in Ronan Curtis, we now have rumblings of a potential departure from Plymouth Argyle.

Whilst it doesn’t seem to have been said officially, it’s been rumoured that Bali Mumba has been looking for a way out of Argyle ever since relegation from the Championship. Reports today suggest he may be about to get their wish. Football League World have stated that fellow League One side Huddersfield Town are looking to sign the wing back on a permanent deal.

Huddersfield may seem like a surprising destination, but it actually makes a great deal of sense. The Terriers, competing for promotion from the third tier, are clearly higher up the food chain than Argyle at present. We know they have a significant budget, whilst Argyle’s own finances have been described as “perilous,” which could make a sale tempting. Additionally, Huddersfield have been playing with wing backs recently, meaning Mumba could be deployed in his favoured position.

Football League World also have plenty of credit in the bank at the moment. They were the first to report on Argyle’s interest in Curtis, which seemed surprising at the time but eventually came to fruition. If they are to be believed this time, it could end up being the case that Argyle see Curtis as a direct Mumba replacement.

Rumour: Argyle to meet Lee release clause

10/01/26

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are set to trigger the release clause of Flint Town defender Isaac Lee

Age: 22

Position: Centre back

This season: 1 goal and 3 assists in 21 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: Another defender linked? Well, I suppose this is clear evidence that Plymouth Argyle are looking to strengthen their options at centre back this winter.

Today, reports have emerged that the Pilgrims are set to meet the release clause for Isaac Lee. The 22-year-old, who I believe holds joint English and South Korean nationality, currently plays for Flint Town United (genuinely their name) in the Welsh top flight. And he’s clearly made an impression, his performance alerting several EFL clubs to his availability.

It seems to be a classic “market value” signing, although I do have a couple of reservations. First of all, the report comes from Pete O’Rourke, whose reputation took a slight hit this week. He was the first, and most prominent, journalist to claim Argyle were set to complete a loan deal for Everton’s Reece Welch. As we’ve recently learnt from Chris Errington, that deal appears to be off. For Argyle fans, it could be a case of “once bitten, twice shy” when it comes to O’Rourke.

Additionally, even if this report is accurate, Argyle face competition to secure Lee’s signature. O’Rourke claims that the Greens are set to meet his release clause alongside Stevenage, Peterborough United, Walsall, Bromley, Salford City and Shrewsbury Town. As the recent summer taught us, we can’t assume Argyle will beat this competition on account of their larger budget alone.

Update: Welch deal off

10/01/26

Despite reports to the contrary, Plymouth Argyle are not believed to be in the race to sign defender Reece Welch this month.

Plymouth Live’s Chris Errington alluded to the news in an article discussing Argyle’s latest arrival, Ronan Curtis. In it, Errington says “meanwhile, Plymouth Live understands that Argyle are not looking to sign Everton defender Reece Welch on loan, despite speculation they are interested in a deal for the 22-year-old.”

Our initial working assumption was that Argyle turned their attentions to Welch after failing in a deal to sign Curtis Nelson. Now? Well, either Welch has also turned Argyle down in favour of another club (possibly Sheffield Wednesday), or Argyle aren’t actually in for a centre back at all.

Source: Plymouth Live

Confirmed: Curtis becomes first January signing

10/01/26

Following strong rumours earlier in the week, Plymouth Argyle have completed their first signing of 2026. The Pilgrims have signed 29-year-old Ronan Curtis, from fellow League One side Port Vale.

Curtis, formerly of Portsmouth and AFC Wimbledon, has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Home Park.

Head coach Tom Cleverley was quoted as saying “We are really pleased to bring Ronan to the club. He has played most of his English career at League One level so has knowledge and experience of the division which will only benefit the group of players we have here.” Meanwhile, director of football Derek Adams described Curtis as “a direct, exciting winger who the Green Army will enjoy watching.”

Curtis will wear Argyle’s number 28 shirt during his time in Devon.

Update: Nelson set for MK

09/01/26

Earlier in the window, Plymouth Argyle were believed to be keen on bringing Curtis Nelson back to the club. Interest in the now 32-year-old centre back was never really concretely confirmed, however. Despite rumours on social media, more reliable sources seemed to advise caution, and that’s taken a step further today.

This morning, journalist Pete O’Rourke reported that Milton Keynes were leading the hunt to sign Nelson. He did actually confirm Argyle’s interest, alongside the likes of Mansfield Town and Burton Albion, but made it clear that MK was the player’s most likely destination. The opportunity to work with former manager Paul Warne, and realistically earn more money, probably played a significant role in that decision.

Admittedly, this one isn’t officially over yet. But given O’Rourke was the journalist who broke the Reece Welch story an hour prior, my working assumption is that Argyle made a tentative move for Nelson, were rebuffed, and moved on to their secondary target.

Rumour: Argyle hunt Welch loan

09/01/26

Rumour: Reece Welch is set to join Plymouth Argyle on loan from Everton

Age: 22

Position: Centre back

This season: 0 appearances

Source: Football Insider

Verdict: News emerged yesterday that Plymouth Argyle were in concrete talks to make Ronan Curtis their first signing of the January window. That deal hasn’t been announced yet but, if we are to believe reports emerging today, a second arrival may follow shortly behind.

This morning, Argyle were linked with a loan move for Everton’s Reece Welch. The 22-year-old centre back hasn’t made a first team appearance for the Toffees this season, but has been on the bench in Premier League games on seven occasions. Additionally, he appeared for Everton’s youth side in a pizza cup game against Grimsby Town in November, getting an assist during his 16 minutes on the pitch.

A move for Welch would probably make sense. Whether we see it as a priority or not is up for debate, but Argyle have clearly been chasing a centre back this month (possibly an indication that Julio Pleguezuelo’s injury is significant). The Pilgrims seem to have at least had some interest in Curtis Nelson, but with that deal seemingly not getting off the ground it seems Welch is the next in line.

That feels truer when we consider the source. Pete O’Rourke, as long-term followers of this page will know, doesn’t have a perfect track record, but it’s certainly better than most. And, when he links one player to a specific club rather than several, his words certainly carry more weight. In his article, O’Rourke clearly states that Argyle lead the race to sign Welch ahead of Sheffield Wednesday; that’s got to mean something.

Watch this space here; it’s very much one that falls into the “more likely than not” category.

Update: Curtis interest intensifies

08/01/26

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are looking to sign Ronan Curtis on a permanent deal

Age: 29

Position: Winger

This season: 3 goals and 6 assists in 27 appearances

Source: Plymouth Live

Verdict: Well well, this rumour has just stepped up a gear. Following reports from Football League World earlier today, Plymouth Argyle’s links to Ronan Curtis have been given confirmation from an even more reliable source, with Chris Errington of Plymouth Live reporting that Argyle are looking to complete a permanent deal.

Errington’s Plymouth Live article leans on the Football League World piece from earlier, whilst also mentioning Tom Cleverley’s comments about the transfer window. Indeed, Cleverley mentioned that “a forward and wide player” are both on the incoming agenda, and Curtis could well fit the bill for both.

When it reaches the stage of Errington’s confirmation, we must assume that a deal is imminent. Expect to hear more on this one soon.

Rumour: Argyle seek Curtis deal

08/01/26

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are keen on signing Port Vale’s Ronan Curtis

Age: 29

Position: Winger

This season: 3 goals and 6 assists in 27 appearances

Source: Football League World

Verdict: In Lorent Tolaj, Plymouth Argyle have had great success from a player brought in from Port Vale. So how about another? That’s the route Argyle are looking to take once more, if you believe reports that have surfaced today.

The Pilgrims have been linked with a move for Ronan Curtis. The former Portsmouth winger, who can also play anywhere across a front three, played a key role alongside Tolaj in Vale’s promotion from League Two last season. Unlike the Swiss striker, Curtis doesn’t appear to have adapted to League One as he’d have liked, but Argyle seem to be hoping that the talents he displayed last season are still there.

The source here is an article in Football League World. They don’t have a perfect record, but it’s decent enough. This isn’t a case of a random Twitter account making a link, nor a site linking a player with several clubs in a scattergun approach. They’ve stuck their neck out by linking Curtis directly with Argyle, and that suggests to me there is at least some weight behind the rumour.

It feels more likely than not, this one. But let’s wait and see.

Rumour rating (/5): ★★★★

Rumour: Nelson and Santos linked

07/01/26

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are looking to sign a centre back, with both Curtis Nelson and Ricardo Santos linked

Age: 32 (Nelson) and 30 (Santos)

Position: Centre back

This season: 2 appearances (Nelson) and 1 appearance (Santos)

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: Rumours have started to swirl regarding Argyle’s interest in a return for Curtis Nelson in recent days. So much so, the prospect of the move was discussed in the latest episode of the Green and White Podcast. Before today though, these appeared to just be rumblings, with no genuinely reliable sources clearly linking Argyle with a move.

You could argue that’s still the case, but it could also be argued that the rumblings have stepped up a gear. That’s because we’ve now had a tweet from Darren Witcoop, who has popped up in transfer windows in the past. He’s stated that Derby are willing to allow Nelson to leave this month, whilst also mentioning that the same is the case for Swansea City’s Ricardo Santos. The pair have made three appearances between them this season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if either moved on.

Witcoop’s record, however, is mixed. Don’t get me wrong, he’s got some things right in the past, but he often tends to jump on the bandwagon of rumours once the rumblings are already out there. It’s notable that Witcoop brought up the Nelson rumour when it was clearly already being mooted. If Santos signs from here? Fair enough, he deserves credit. If Nelson does? Nah.

It’s also been framed in a strange way. Witcoop hasn’t directly said that Argyle are interested in either player. Merely, he’s simply added #argyle at the end of his tweet (yep, #argyle and bizarrely not #pafc). It’s a strange way to report, and makes me wonder whether he genuinely believes what he’s reporting, or just wants engagement from Argyle fans.

It’s all of a bit of a mess, but I don’t think we’ve heard the last of this.

Issaka returns to Argyle

06/01/26

Plymouth Argyle have confirmed that Freddie Issaka’s loan at Bristol Rovers has been terminated my mutual consent. It’s a move reminiscent of Law McCabe’s – there was a growing acceptance from both sides that the loan wasn’t working out, so the player has now returned to their parent club for the remainder of the campaign.

It’s worth noting that Issaka has now played for both Argyle and Bristol Rovers this season. As such, FIFA’s rules dictate that he will not be able to be loaned out again during the January window. We can therefore expect to see him in Argyle matchday squads for the remainder of the campaign.

Rumour: Szucs to join Ferencvaros

05/01/26

Rumour: Kornel Szucs is set to move back to Hungary and sign for Ferencvaros

Age: 24

Position: Centre back/right back

This season: 22 appearances

Source: Various

Verdict: There’s various sources for this one, and they all seem to stem from social media speculation. Plenty seem to believe that Kornel Szucs is set to leave Plymouth Argyle to sign for Robbie Keane’s Ferencvaros in his native Hungary. Right now though, this all appears to be speculation.

The first links between Szucs and the 36-time Hungarian champions came via the Twitter account of Hungarian journalist Cseh Benjamin. However, his update wasn’t particularly committal. Benjamin mentioned that Ferencvaros were “in the picture” for Szucs, but also that practically every top-flight Hungarian club had also expressed an interest. Benjamin then confirmed that “no Hungarian club has taken any concrete steps to acquire the defender.”

That tweet was around a month ago now, and I think it’s doing the rounds again on the back of Szucs’ absence from the squad for the win over Burton Albion. It’s merely pattern following. Law McCabe missed that squad too, and his return to parent club Middlesbrough was confirmed shortly afterwards. But there have been no further updates on Szucs, and no indication that a move has advanced any further than before.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Szucs did depart this month. There are rumours that he’s unsettled, along with just about everybody who signed for Argyle during the Championship days, and there’s every chance that Ferencvaros or another Hungarian club could strengthen their interest. But I’m going to need to see more before I can consider any move imminent.

Confirmed: McCabe returns to Middlesbrough

05/01/26

Plymouth Argyle have confirmed that midfielder Law McCabe has had his loan at the club terminated. He will return to parent club Middlesbrough for the remainder of the campaign. McCabe made 13 appearances during his time at Home Park, but it has now been announced that the clubs have “mutually agreed” to end his loan this month.

Whilst the official announcement came today, head coach Tom Cleverley confirmed McCabe was returning to Middlesbrough following yesterday’s 3-0 win over Burton Albion. He later mentioned that the mid-season style of play was key to this decision, quoted in Plymouth Live as saying “He couldn’t grow into the situation. We needed short term results now, playing a bit more direct than we visualised at the start of the season, and Law suffered a little bit for that.”

Debate will no doubt rage on about whether Argyle got the most out of McCabe during the four months he spent at the club.

New contract: Joe Ralls

03/01/26

Following yesterday’s encouraging update from Tom Cleverley, Plymouth Argyle have confirmed that midfielder Joe Ralls will remain at the club until the end of the season.

Initially signed “until January,” Ralls’ contract was set to expire following Sunday’s meeting with Burton Albion. However, he’s made a significant impression in that time, and the Greens have moved quickly to ensure he’ll remain at the club beyond this transfer window.

Cleverley was quoted as saying “Joe has made an immediate impact since his arrival at the club, both on and off the pitch. His lengthy football league experience has been invaluable to our young squad and when he has appeared he has shown just how good a footballer he is. We are really pleased to secure Joe to a new contract and look forward to his continued contribution.”

Ralls extension "all but done"

02/01/26

Plymouth Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley has confirmed that a deal to keep Joe Ralls at Home Park until the end of the season is nearing completion. Ralls initially signed for Argyle in November, on a deal running “initially until January.” Initially, we weren’t sure when exactly in January that would be, but it has since emerged that Ralls’ initial deal expires after Sunday afternoon’s clash with Burton Albion.

Cleverley, however, is bullish about Argyle’s chances of keeping Ralls around. Speaking to Plymouth Live over an extended contract, he said “All but agreed on that one. We have got him until after Sunday and we are all very hopeful that there will be an announcement Monday.”

Given his impact since signing, Ralls’ contract extension will surely be seen as the first big plus of Argyle’s transfer window, if indeed a deal is agreed.

Winter transfer window open
Confirmed: Argyle sign Ralls

05/11/25

Following a poor run of form, Plymouth Argyle have dipped into the free agent market. The Pilgrims have completed the signing of Joe Ralls, on a “short-term contract, initially until January.”

A 32-year-old midfielder, Ralls joins Argyle having been released by Cardiff City in the summer. He’s previously spent 14 years at Cardiff, often captaining the side, and regularly featuring for the Bluebirds in the Championship.

Head coach Tom Cleverley was quoted as saying “Joe has extensive experience at Championship level and will bring that experience and leadership qualities to our young squad. Alongside that, he is an exceptional footballer who will strengthen our midfield options and add versatility across a number of positions.”

Ralls will be available for Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield Town, and will wear the number 32 shirt during his stay at Home Park.

Confirmed: Dale becomes final summer signing

01/09/25

Plymouth Argyle have officially announced the signing of Owen Dale. The 26-year-old was linked with the club earlier on deadline day, and his arrival has been announced, with the player joining on a season-long loan from Oxford United.

Upon Dale’s arrival, head coach Tom Cleverley was quoted as saying ““Owen brings with him strong EFL experience having played close to 250 games at just 26 years of age. Nearly 150 of those have come at League One level, and he has also played at a higher level for Oxford United, so will bring real quality and experience to the squad.”

“He will add to the mentality of the group but most importantly will strengthen our options in a wide area and increase our creativity and output. I am delighted to bring him to Argyle and want to welcome him to the club.”

Dale will wear the number 35 shirt during his stay at Home Park and, based on Chris Errington’s reporting on the deal, he will become the final signing for the Pilgrims this summer.

Confirmed: Issaka loaned to Bristol Rovers

01/09/25

A surprise late move has been made, and it concerns an outgoing from Plymouth Argyle. Freddie Issaka, the Argyle academy graduate, has departed on a season-long loan to Bristol Rovers.

It’s a deal that feels acceptable in a vacuum, given Issaka’s need for minutes to continue his development. However, it seems a surprising deal to sanction now, given Tom Cleverley’s insistence on playing with a 4-2-3-1, paired with the lack of fit wingers Argyle have on their books after Xavier Amaechi’s injury.

Update: Ellis joins Fleetwood

01/09/25

Plymouth Argyle’s proposed move for Ethan Ennis has officially not gone through, with the player announced as a new signing by Fleetwood Town. The 20-year-old joins the Cod Army on a season-long loan from Manchester United.

Unlike the reported interest in Ollie Cooper, we can be absolutely certain that Argyle made a proposal for Ennis, given the quality of sources reporting on the offer. Thus, this must be seen as an unfortunate failure by the club.

Confirmed: Argyle seal McCabe loan

01/09/25

That was quick. Mere moments after Chris Errington broke the news that Plymouth Argyle were set to complete the signing of Middlesbrough’s Law McCabe, the club themselves have confirmed that McCabe has joined on a season-long loan.

Head coach Tom Cleverley was quoted as saying “Law is an exceptional young talent who is highly thought of by everyone at Middlesbrough. He is technically very good, excellent on the ball, and will complement the style of play we are looking to implement, perfectly.”

McCabe, currently away on England duty at under-20 level, doesn’t have a great deal of appearances at senior level. Middlesbrough will gain from this deal as McCabe gets games with Argyle. Hopefully, he’ll be good enough to ensure Argyle gain from the deal too.

Rumour: McCabe to join on loan

01/09/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are set to sign Middlesbrough midfielder Law McCabe on loan

Age: 19

Position: Central midfielder

Last season: 2 appearances

Source: Plymouth Live

Verdict: I think we can confidently say that Plymouth Argyle are set to complete a signing. Chris Errington has tweeted that a deal seems imminent for Middlesbrough’s Law McCabe. And in these parts, when Errington speaks, we listen.

His update, which also appears in his Plymouth Live deadline day blog, doesn’t go into too much detail. Simply, Errington says “I understand Argyle are set to sign midfielder Law McCabe from Middlesbrough on a season-long loan. McCabe, 19, is currently with the England under-20s squad.”

Would a 19-year-old midfielder on loan from a Championship club have been the ideal option at the start of the transfer window? I highly doubt it. However, we can debate what this deal means later – in terms of reliability, this feels as good as done.

Rumour: Argyle seek Dale loan

01/09/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle have agreed a loan deal to sign Oxford United’s Owen Dale

Age: 26

Position: Winger

Last season: 1 goal and 1 assist in 30 appearances (18 on loan at Wigan Athletic)

Source: Football League World

Verdict: Now, a new rumour, and perhaps the first piece of good news for Plymouth Argyle in terms of incomings today. The Greens have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Owen Dale from Oxford United on loan.

Dale, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Wigan Athletic, hasn’t made an appearance for Oxford this season. It would hardly be a surprise if he were to leave and, with Xavier Amaechi’s injury news over the weekend, Dale would appear to have been targeted as cover until he returns in January.

The reports come from Football League World. I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, and I appreciate that the fact they’ve linked the player to a specific club gives the report a slightly higher degree of reliability. However, they did the same when linking Argyle with a move for Ben Osborn last week, before claiming Stockport County were likely to sign him today. The Dale deal, therefore, can’t be seen as done yet, but I imagine it’s more likely than not.

Update: Stockport lead race for Osborn

01/09/25

Yet another deal appears to have fallen through for Plymouth Argyle this deadline day. Late last week, Argyle were linked with a loan move for Derby County’s Ben Osborn. However, it now appears that Stockport County lead the race to secure Osborn’s services.

Today’s reports stem from Football League World. Whether you believe in them or not, they were the people who initially brought the links between Argyle and Osborn to our attention. If we were to give those reports any credit, we must now assume that Stockport are the favourites to sign the player.

Perhaps this one isn’t over, but I think it’s a long shot that we’ll see Osborn sign for Argyle today.

Update: Wigan favourites for Cooper

01/09/25

Another deal Plymouth Argyle were reportedly looking to complete today appears to be on the rocks. The Pilgrims were linked with a loan move for Swansea City’s Ollie Cooper, but it now seems another League One club are set to secure his signature.

Argyle were linked with Cooper yesterday by Darren Witcoop, someone whose reliability I have been led to question. However, he was correct about one part of the rumour, and it isn’t the part that will bring joy to Argyle supporters. Ryan Lowe’s Wigan Athletic, who Witcoop also linked to Cooper, are the favourites to sign him, according to reports by BBC Sport today.

BBC Sport are obviously reliable, but the language of the update doesn’t suggest a deal is done just yet. There is perhaps still some life in this deal, but I suspect Wigan is now Cooper’s most likely destination by far.

01/09/25

Plymouth Argyle’s first potential move on deadline day appears to have fallen through. Yesterday, it was reported that the Pilgrims were battling with League Two side Fleetwood Town to sign Ethan Ennis on loan from Manchester United. However, Manchester Evening News have today claimed that the player has chosen Fleetwood, and will complete a loan deal later today.

According to Manchester United writer Steven Railston, who carries significant reliability as an actual journalist, “Plymouth Argyle made an offer to sign Ennis on loan for 2025/2026, but the decision was made to sign for Fleetwood ahead of the transfer deadline.”

For my own sanity, I’m going to assume that location and playing time were significant factors in coming to this decision.

Rumour: Argyle battle Wigan for Cooper

31/08/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are battling Wigan Athletic to loan Swansea City’s Ollie Cooper

Age: 25

Position: Attacking Midfielder

Last season: 1 goal and 2 assists in 29 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: Right, maybe I’m being unfair, but I’m putting Darren Witcoop on fraud watch. He was previously a journalist, but now works as an agent, and I can’t recall ever seeing him get something right in an Argyle context.

The problem I have with Witcoop is that all of his rumours seem “predictable,” and it gives me the impression that he’s guessing. For example, I first became aware of him when he linked Luke Cundle with a return to Home Park last January. That move didn’t come off, and such a rumour would hardly take a lot of imagination to start.

Lately, Witcoop has linked Argyle with a move for Swansea City’s Ollie Cooper, claiming that the Greens are battling Wigan Athletic to secure him on loan. Again, this feels like guesswork. Cooper is likely to leave on loan, so Witcoop has picked out two clubs in the division below who may be interested. I’m not convinced that Argyle are close to a deal here.

Maybe I’m wrong and will shortly need to eat my words. And I’d be happy to, because on paper Cooper would be a tidy signing. Right now though, I think Witcoop has built a reputation on who he used to be, rather than who he is today. Let’s see if that’s about to change.

Rumour: Ennis to join on loan

30/08/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are in the hunt to sign Manchester United youngster Ethan Ennis on loan

Age: 20

Position: Winger

Last season: 2 assists in 17 appearances (on loan at Doncaster Rovers)

Source: BBC Sport

Verdict: News emerged today that Xavier Amaechi will be out until the new year with a torn hamstring. Shortly afterwards, Plymouth Argyle were linked with a loan move for a winger. Coincidence? I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.

Argyle have been linked with a move for Manchester United’s Ethan Ennis. The 20-year-old spent lats season on loan at Doncaster Rovers, and could look to move to League One for the next step in his development. The reports come from BBC Sport, so the source is about as top-tier as you can expect; I’m completely convinced of Argyle’s interest.

Argyle are said to be battling League Two side Fleetwood Town for Ennis’ signature. In normal circumstances, I’d suggest that choosing Argyle would be a no-brainer, particularly with head coach Tom Cleverley’s Manchester United connections. Given how this transfer window has gone though, we perhaps shouldn’t make those presumptions. Regardless, with the deadline looming, we’ll hear more on this one before long.

Rumour: Argyle make Osborn loan approach

29/08/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle have made a late move to sign Derby County’s Ben Osborn

Age: 31

Position: Central midfielder

Last season: 1 assist in 26 appearances

Source: Football League World

Verdict: The transfer window has a matter of days to run, and we’ve been hit with a surprise link to a player we haven’t heard from in an Argyle context this summer. Ben Osborn, currently of Derby County, is being linked with a move to Home Park on a loan deal.

The source here is Football League World. They don’t have a flawless record, but are putting their neck on a line with an exclusive here. There are no links to other clubs, so I’m inclined to believe them a little more. And the move would make sense – Tom Cleverley has been vocal about his desire to add a midfielder in the dying embers of the transfer window, and Osborn would seem to fit the bill.

It has a little “Jay Fulton” feel about it, with Argyle looking to sign an experienced midfielder from a Championship side at the end of the window. That deal didn’t come off, so there is no guarantee this one will either. However, I’m suitably convinced that Argyle’s interest is genuine.

Rumour: Scarr to return

27/08/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are in the hunt to sign Wrexham centre back Dan Scarr

Age: 30

Position: Centre back

Last season: 2 assists in 20 appearances

Source: Sportsboom

Verdict: Ok, I’m finding it very difficult to judge this one. Not in the case of the player himself – we know what Dan Scarr is all about – but in terms of whether the source is actually believable.

On the face of it, everything seems perfectly legitimate. Scarr has been linked to Plymouth Argyle on an actual website, and by an actual journalist. However, scratch beneath the surface and there is more than a little doubt as to its legitimacy. I’ve never heard of Sportsboom before today; that means nothing on its own, but it seems I’m not alone. Despite existing for over two years, their Twitter account only has 165 followers, hardly an indication of a strong reputation.

Additionally, the journalist behind the article is Shane MacDermott. I’m much more confident on his own reliability in general, but his areas of expertise seem to be snooker and cricket rather than football. He’s followed by snooker players, as well as those related to the game, but doesn’t appear to have many connections with those involved in football.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m reading into this too much; I can see very obvious reasons why Argyle would be interested in signing Scarr. My instinct is that Sportsboom are putting out rumours that feel believable to build their credibility, without actually having any insider knowledge. However, even if the rumour is true, Scarr has also been linked with Reading and Cardiff City. It’s hardly a done deal regardless.

New Contract: Tegan Finn

25/08/25

In what must be seen as a major boost to Plymouth Argyle’s summer, academy graduate Tegan Finn has signed his first professional contract at the club.

The 17-year-old, who has already made four first team appearances this season, was strongly linked with a move away from Home Park, with Nottingham Forest seemingly his most likely destination. However, those rumours can be put to bed for now, with Finn committing his future to Argyle with a three-year deal.

Head coach Tom Cleverley was quoted as saying “Tegan was someone I was aware of before I joined the club. Wayne (Rooney) spoke very highly of him and obviously gave him his debut as well. Since I’ve been at the club, I have seen the talent he has at his disposal first hand, and it is brilliant news for the football club that one of our key Academy products has decided to stay.”

Confirmed: Palsson contract mutually terminated

24/08/25

After a year at Plymouth Argyle, Victor Palsson has departed the club. The Icelandic centre back has had his contract terminated by mutual consent in order for him to pursue an opportunity elsewhere; rumours strongly link him with a move to AC Horsens in Denmark.

Palsson played 31 times for Argyle, featuring under three different head coaches despite only being at the club from last summer. His departure means Kornel Szucs is the only player signed by Wayne Rooney to remain at Home Park. Palsson never scored for the club, but did get three assists during his time in green.

There was a particularly interesting comment in his departure article, with Palsson saying “to the Green Army: we’re all just humans doing our best. Your support means more than you know.”

Confirmed: Tolaj signs for £1.2 million

22/08/25

At long, long last, Plymouth Argyle have signed a player to wear their number 9 short. Lorent Tolaj, formerly of Port Vale, has signed for the Greens on a four-year deal.

There were reliable rumours earlier that Argyle had met the release clause in his contract at Vale, valued at £1.2 million. Things have clearly advanced apace since then, with Tolaj confirmed as an Argyle player this evening. He has also supposedly been registered in time to feature against Blackpool at Home Park tomorrow afternoon.

Speaking on Tolaj, head coach Tom Cleverley said “Wherever he has been he has shown he is a proven goal scorer, with an incredible record at every club and we are confident he will translate that to an Argyle shirt. I’ve been vocal throughout the window that we wanted the right number nine in the building, and although it has taken longer than we all would have hoped, I couldn’t be happier that we have managed to bring Lorent to the club.”

Rumour: Argyle meet Tolaj release clause

22/08/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle have triggered the release clause of Port Vale striker Lorent Tolaj

Age: 23

Position: Striker

Last season: 15 goals and 9 assists in 42 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: Plymouth Argyle have been chasing a striker for what feels like a lifetime. Now, finally, the end appears to be in sight. It’s been reported today that the Greens have met the £1.2 million release clause for Port Vale’s Swiss striker Lorent Tolaj.

The report comes from Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, who has got a lot right regarding Argyle across the window. He was the first to report on the Pilgrims’ eventually successful pursuit of Bradley Ibrahim, whilst also breaking the news about the chase of Celtic’s Stephen Welsh. Ok, the latter move didn’t come to fruition, but that wasn’t due to a fault at Argyle’s end; the interest was clearly there.

A release clause being matched doesn’t necessarily mean a deal is done. Granted, you wouldn’t expect Argyle to make such a move without some encouragement from the player’s end, but we’ve been scorned before in the striker market this summer. I won’t get totally excited just yet, but this is surely the closest we’ve come so far to securing the elusive number nine.

Rumour: Palsson to leave

21/08/25

Rumour: Victor Palsson has numerous offers to leave Plymouth Argyle, with Danish side AC Horsens amongst the contenders

Age: 34

Position: Centre back

This season: 2 assists in 4 appearances

Source: Bold

Verdict: Following the arrival of Mathias Ross, Plymouth Argyle’s first ever Danish player, the Pilgrims may be set to return the favour by sending one of their own to Scandinavia. According to reports, Victor Palsson may be set to depart the club, with at least one Danish club interested in securing his services.

The reports come from Danish website Bold, which seems to cover sport in the country. They carried the Ross headlines from yesterday, which turned out to be reliable information, and they clearly have a decent record and level of respectability within Denmark. Their report claims that AC Horsens are chasing Palsson as they go through a defensive injury crisis, but that there are several options available to the player. One of those options may be staying at Argyle, but it would seem to be one of many.

A deal would probably make sense for all parties. Despite captaining the side at the start of the campaign, and getting two assists already this term, Palsson clearly doesn’t fit perfectly into Tom Cleverley’s plan to play a back four. Now 34, the opportunity of a new deal somewhere else may be impossible to refuse for the player too. It’s not certain he’ll end up at AC Horsens, but his departure from Argyle is now surely likely in some capacity.

Update: Welsh deal off

22/08/25

Plymouth Argyle have ended their pursuit of Celtic defender Stephen Welsh. The 25-year-old centre back has been linked with Argyle across the past two windows, and it was widely believed that the Pilgrims had made a loan offer for the player this summer. However, Celitc were reluctant to sanction the deal, given the FIFA-imposed limit of six loans to foreign clubs at any one time.

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Celtic finally confirmed that they’d be willing to sanction a loan move. However, by that stage Argyle had already moved on, bringing in Alex Mitchell and Mathias Ross earlier this week. A sign, perhaps, of lessons being learned from the protracted pursuits of Josh Coburn and Rumarn Burrell.

Confirmed: Ross signs three-year deal

21/08/25

Following rumours circling over the last couple of days, and suggestions that the player himself had been spotted at Home Park, Plymouth Argyle have indeed now confirmed the arrival of Mathias Ross. The 24-year-old centre back, formerly of Galatasaray, joins the Pilgrims as a free agent on a three-year deal.

It was rumoured that Argyle had beaten several Championship sides to secure the signing of Ross, whilst head of football operations David Fox also claimed that a number of clubs across Europe were looking to bring him in. Clearly, this is viewed as somewhat of a coup amongst the Argyle hierarchy.

Following it being vacated by Bali Mumba’s switch to 11 over the summer, Ross will wear the number 2 shirt during his Home Park spell.

Rumour: Ballard linked with three

19/08/25

Rumour: Dom Ballard is expected to leave Southampton on a permanent deal this summer, with Plymouth Argyle amongst the interested clubs

Age: 20

Position: Striker

Last season: 3 goals in 39 appearances (on loan at Blackpool and Cambridge United)

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: After an incoming (a genuine, real life incoming!) yesterday, Plymouth Argyle look set to continue exploiting the transfer market as the window draws to a close. The latest link sees the Pilgrims in the hunt for Southampton’s Dom Ballard, who spent last season in League One with separate loan spells at Blackpool and Cambridge United.

Ballard, not to be confused with (as I once did) Dan Ballard who scored for Sunderland in the Premier League at the weekend, now looks set to leave Southampton on a permanent basis. The rumour stems from the Just Saints Twitter account, but the actual source is an article by Southern Daily Echo reporter Alfie House. House’s article itself is behind a paywall, but this would be a strange one for Just Saints to make up, so we can assume information has been reliably conveyed.

Am I excited by this one yet? Not exactly, for separate reasons. Ballard only scored three goals in the third tier last season, and hardly looks like the prolific goalscorer Argyle crave. And even if the rumour is true, Ballard has also been linked with both Leyton Orient and Barnsley alongside Argyle. This summer, that seems like stiff competition, so we’ll wait and see how this one progresses.

Confirmed: Argyle loan Mitchell

18/08/25

At long, long last, Plymouth Argyle have completed a signing. Having not seen a player arrive who wasn’t already on trial with the club since 4th July, Alex Mitchell has arrived at Home Park on loan from Championship side Charlton Athletic.

Head coach Tom Cleverley was quoted as saying “It is no secret that we have been looking to add defensive options and in Alex we feel we have the perfect addition. He is young but has good experience of League One and played an integral part in Charlton’s promotion last season, so brings with him experience of consistently winning.”

Mitchell will wear the number 15 shirt during his time at Home Park, and has been registered in time to feature in Argyle’s League One clash with Leyton Orient tomorrow night.

Rumour: Ross to join on free transfer

20/08/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are set to complete the signing of Danish defender Mathias Ross

Age: 24

Position: Centre back

Last season: 1 goal in 17 appearances

Source: Nordjyske

Verdict: Following the arrival of one centre back to kick off the week, Plymouth Argyle look to be in the market for another. This time they’re being linked with free agent Mathias Ross, previously of Galatasaray, who spent last season on loan at Sparta Prague.

Links between the club and Ross have spread like wildfire today. The first official source I’ve been able to track it back to is Danish publication Nordjyske. The article itself is behind a paywall but, according to those quoting it elsewhere, they claim the deal is as good as done. Argyle are said to have beaten the likes of Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City to secure his signature.

Given that the rumour started on social media (Ross was supposedly spotted at Home Park in last night’s 1-0 defeat to Leyton Orient), and given that I can’t vouch for the original source, I’ll stop short of giving this one five stars. However, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Ross was an Argyle player sooner rather than later.

Rumour: Argyle battle for Graydon

14/08/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are battling to sign Ryan Graydon from Fleetwood Town

Age: 26

Position: Winger/Striker

Last season: 13 goals and 7 assists in 39 appearances

Source: Sky Sports

Verdict: An interesting one here. Plymouth Argyle have been searching for a striker all summer…and probably for the best part of two years after the departure of Niall Ennis. Having been knocked back for a variety of targets, they now appear to have turned their attentions to Fleetwood Town’s Ryan Graydon.

The reports have come from Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas. Despite this not featuring in a standalone tweet or article, it does feature on Sky Sports’ rolling transfers page, and Thomas has a significant degree of reliability as an actual journalist. He mentions that Argyle are interested in the player, alongside League One rivals Lincoln City, Wigan Athletic and Rotherham United. Location issues, anyone?

Thomas also correctly notes that Graydon is in the final year of his contract at Fleetwood. It could therefore prove to be a “value in the market” signing for Argyle, whilst his current club could be motivated to sell.

I am slightly torn. First of all, Argyle clearly face stiff competition for the player’s signature, and I certainly wouldn’t make them favourites given what we’ve seen all summer. Secondly, would he be the striker Argyle need, even if they do complete the signing? As someone who can also play out wide, he’d be a perfectly acceptable utility man. As the main number 9, however, there’d be an awful lot of pressure on him to deliver.

Rumour: Goalkeeper Tyrer to join on loan

13/08/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are set to sign Everton goalkeeper Harry Tyrer on loan

Age: 23

Position: Goalkeeper

Last season: 13 clean sheets in 42 appearances (on loan at Blackpool)

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: A pretty quick dismissal here I’m afraid. A rumour doing the rounds that Plymouth Argyle are set to sign Everton goalkeeper Harry Tyrer has stemmed from the Twitter account of Cyril Pemberton. This is a bogus account. Its profile picture is AI generated, it has no real following, and even in its own bio claims that “nothing is confirmed or official.” It’s possibly the one true fact to ever appear on the page.

Some Argyle fans have been clamouring for a goalkeeper to be signed after Luca Ashby-Hammond’s poor start to the campaign. And some more reliable Everton accounts are suggesting Tyrer may be allowed to leave on loan this summer. However, it certainly won’t be immediately, and it’s highly unlikely to be to Argyle.

Youth loan: Jack Matthews

08/08/25

Plymouth Argyle have confirmed that Jack Matthews has left the club on loan. The 19-year-old defender has signed for Bath City, signing a deal until the January transfer window.

Given Argyle are currently experiencing depth problems at centre back, one assumes the Greens would only have sanctioned this deal with an adequate replacement waiting in the wings. Tom Cleverley mentioned in his pre-Bolton Wanderers press conference that a central defender could be signed in time to feature, but thus far nothing has been forthcoming.

Update: Taylor signs for Blackpool

07/08/25

In their continued and painful striker search, Plymouth Argyle had been linked with a move for Dale Taylor. It was rumoured that the Greens had a bid accepted, alongside Blackpool, for the Northern Ireland international. It was up to the player where he moved and, in keeping with how this search has gone for Argyle, he was announced as a Blackpool player earlier today.

Taylor falls on the failed forward signing heap alongside Rumarn Burrell, Christian Saydee and Mark O’Mahony, amongst others. The situation gets more desperate, but Argyle’s search for a number 9 must go on.

Rumour: Argyle make Welsh loan offer

30/07/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle have made a loan approach for Celtic defender Stephen Welsh

Age: 25

Position: Centre back

Last season: 1 goal in 18 appearances (on loan at KV Mechelen)

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: As far as I can remember, this isn’t the first time Plymouth Argyle have been linked with a move for Stephen Welsh. And previously I impressed myself by remarking that a Scottish defender called Welsh could be set to sign for a club in England. I didn’t want to bore you with that wordplay again, but here we are.

Argyle have today been linked with a loan move for Welsh. The reports come from the Twitter account of Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, who has tended to be fairly reliable across this transfer window. Welsh spent last season on loan at Belgian side KV Mechelen, who supposedly tried to bring him back this summer on a permanent deal. That, however, proved unsuccessful, and it seems Welsh is still available for a move.

Joseph mentions an offer has been made but, as Mechelen know, that doesn’t guarantee it’ll be accepted. Still, I’ve no doubt Argyle’s interest is genuine, and we’ll see how this one progresses.

Update: Burrell signs for QPR

26/07/25

Well, this is an undeniable blow to Plymouth Argyle’s transfer window. A move for Burton Albion’s Rumarn Burrell was first mooted back in June, and had been off and on again ever since within the social media sphere. However, it has now been announced that Burrell has completed a move to Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

Burrell is said to have moved to QPR for a seven-figure sum, and missing out on him means Argyle only have Bim Pepple and Owen Oseni as their striker options with less than a week to go before their season opener with Barnsley.

Rumour: Argyle battle Blackpool for Taylor

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are battling Blackpool to sign Nottingham Forest striker Dale Taylor

Age: 21

Position: Striker

Last season: 11 goals and 7 assists in 47 appearances (on loan at Wigan Athletic)

Source: Alan Nixon

Verdict: Having missed out on Rumarn Burrell, Plymouth Argyle’s striker search has taken another twist. Now, the Greens are being linked with a move for Nottingham Forest forward Dale Taylor, a 21-year-old who had a strong campaign on loan at League One side Wigan Athletic last season.

The rumour has come from the Patreon account of Alan Nixon. As always, I’m at pains to say I don’t subscribe, and always treat rumours behind a paywall with a degree of scepticism. However, Nixon does, as it was so eloquently put recently, know people. I suspect his confirmation of Argyle’s interest is genuine.

By the sounds of it, Argyle are in direct competition with Blackpool to secure the player’s signature. And it also appears that both clubs are offering different deals; recent reports suggest Argyle are keen on a permanent transfer, whilst Blackpool would prefer a loan. Will that be enough to tip the balance in Argyle’s favour? I get the sense we’ll find out before long.

Rumour: Ngumoha to join on loan

26/07/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are set to sign Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha on loan

Age: 16

Position: Winger

Last season: 1 appearance

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: An introduction for many to the latest parody account doing the rounds on Twitter, I’m afraid. The person behind “Anfield Papers” has paid for Twitter verification to deliberately spread false rumours. Quite why, I’ve no idea.

Their latest falsehood has been to link Plymouth Argyle with a loan move for Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha. Ngumoha is only 16, has been part of Liverpool’s pre-season tour to the Far East (much needed, I’m sure we all agree, over FA Cup replays). There are rumours he’ll move up the pecking order at Anfield following the imminent departure of Luis Diaz, and he won’t be going on loan to League One no matter how much this bogus account tries to convince us.

It’s impressive that some Liverpool fans still have Argyle on their mind after the FA Cup tie in February. Nothing to see here.

Rumour: Blackburn join Mumba race

25/07/25

Rumour: Blackburn Rovers “want to sign” Plymouth Argyle’s Bali Mumba

Age: 23

Position: Wing back

Last season: 3 assists in 37 appearances

Source: EFL Analysis

Verdict: Whilst plenty of Argyle players have been linked with moves away this summer, and some have indeed made the jump to other clubs, news on Bali Mumba seemed to have dried up. However, that particular rumour mill has started swirling again today, with the player now linked with a move to Blackburn Rovers.

The rumour stems from the EFL Analysis website, and has come from their transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey. It should be said that Bailey has spoken about Mumba before in this window, linking him with a move to Middlesbrough. However, his latest line is that Boro are now looking to bring in Blackburn’s Callum Brittain, with Rovers looking at Mumba as a potential replacement.

With the Middlesbrough rumour not coming to fruition a couple of months after it started, I’m keen to take this report with a certain degree of caution. Blackburn may be interested but, as Bailey himself says, “Plymouth want to keep hold of him, though. So again, unless someone comes up with the money there, it won’t necessarily be easy to get him out.” I’m not expecting a speedy resolution here.

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are set to sign Aston Villa defender Sil Swinkels on loan

Age: 21

Position: Centre back

Last season: 2 goals in 18 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: Ok, this one is going to take a little interpretation. Plymouth Argyle have been linked with a move for Aston Villa defender Sil Swinkels, albeit in an indirect way, and there are rumours circulating that he is set to have a medical at Home Park today.

Breaking it down, we can say that Swinkels is set to leave Villa on loan this summer. We can also say that he is believed to be having a medical at a League One club. All of this has come from the Twitter account of Jacob Tanswell. He’s the Aston Villa writer for The Athletic, and should be considered as incredibly reliable in this matter.

There’s one problem: Tanswell hasn’t confirmed which club Swinkels is moving to. He claims that it’s “a club Villa have a good relationship with,” which has led to some concluding this is Argyle, given the dealings the clubs have had in the past. And it may well be; I can certainly see many reasons why such a deal would make sense. However, I’m not in a position to say I’m confident this will be done. Not yet.

Confirmed: Ashby-Hammond deal announced

23/07/25

It’s been a long time coming, but Plymouth Argyle have finally signed their backup goalkeeper. Luca Ashby-Hammond’s arrival has officially been confirmed, after he played for the Greens on trial throughout pre-season. He scored a notable own goal against Eintracht Braunschweig, but that clearly didn’t give anyone in the Argyle hierarchy the ick.

Head coach Tom Cleverley was quoted as saying “I’m very pleased Luca has agreed to join us. He joined us in Austria, and it is not easy to come on a trip like that as a trialist, but he fit really well into the group. He has a calm, focused character, impressed us on the training ground, and adds depth to our goalkeeping department.”

Ashby-Hammond will wear the number 21 shirt at Home Park. The previous holder, Conor Hazard, has taken over the number 1 jersey.

10/07/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle have taken goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond on trial

Age: 24

Position: Goalkeeper

Last season: 4 appearances

Source: Plymouth Live

Verdict: Plymouth Argyle’s goalkeeper search has taken yet another turn. After Pete O’Rourke claimed the Greens were set to sign Archie Mair, head coach Tom Cleverley rebuffed these claims, confirming instead that Tyler Miller had been on trial with the club. Now, it appears that attentions have once again turned elsewhere.

The latest, as confirmed by reports in Plymouth Live, is that Argyle have taken goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond on trial. The 24-year-old is a free agent this summer, having been released by Fulham, and he’s had numerous loan spells at EFL and National League level. It’s also been confirmed that Miller was offered a contract with Argyle, but has turned it down, explaining why Argyle have now looked towards other options.

I’ve no idea how to rate these anymore. Is Ashby-Hammond on trial with Argyle? Definitely. Will that result in a contract being offered? That simply remains to be seen.

Confirmed: Al Hajj departs

11/07/25

In unsurprising news, it has been confirmed that Rami Al Hajj has completed a permanent move away from Plymouth Argyle. Head coach Tom Cleverley confirmed yesterday that Argyle were working on moving Al Hajj on, and that move has now been made official.

The midfielder, who signed for Argyle from Danish side Odense last summer, has returned to Denmark by signing for Silkeborg. Argyle didn’t mention the transfer fee in the confirmation article, but did mention a sell-on clause had been secured. Given Argyle confirmed they broke even with Maksym Talovierov, we can infer from their vagueness that Argyle made a loss on the Al Hajj deal.

Al Hajj scored three goals during his time as a Pilgrim.

Confirmed: Argyle announce Benarous deal

08/07/25

Following news that Plymouth Argyle had taken the player on trial, and offered him a contract as of last week, Ayman Benarous has now been officially announced as a new signing. The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year deal, following his departure from Bristol City.

Benarous’ time at Ashton Gate was severely hampered by injury. As such, a one-year deal seems to make a lot of sense for both Benarous and Argyle. It has not yet been confirmed whether an option exists to extend his contract, should either party desire, and particularly if he remains injury free at Home Park.

Head coach Tom Cleverley said “Ayman is a young player with brilliant potential and has impressed us all since he came in to train with the squad. He was highly thought of at Bristol City but unfortunately had bad luck with injuries. He’s shown everyone here during the last week the talent he has at his disposal.”

Update: Al Hajj expected to leave

10/07/25

Tom Cleverley has delivered an update on the future of Plymouth Argyle’s Rami Al Hajj. The Pilgrims’ head coach confirmed that Al Hajj had not travelled with the team for their pre-season camp in Austria, and Cleverley suggested that the player is expected to leave Argyle in the near future.

Online, Cleverley was fully quoted as saying “Rami looks close to a move away from the club. It was apparent to me when I arrived that he wanted to move away from the club, and England. We’re all working towards that.”

There have been no indications as to Al Hajj’s potential destination, nor whether he’s set to leave on loan or on a permanent deal. However, given the tone of Cleverley’s words, an exit appears imminent, and the rumours swirling a fortnight or so ago have turned out to be true.

Age: 27

Position: Attacking Midfielder/Striker

Last season: 20 goals and 5 assists in 49 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: This page exists for two reasons. First, to source and confirm genuine news relating to Plymouth Argyle’s transfer window. The second is to debunk fake news that finds it was spreading through the social media sphere. Every now and then, a rumour surfaces that is a blatant contender for the latter category, and this is a prime example.

Plymouth Argyle have been linked with a move for Davis Keillor-Dunn from opening day opponents Barnsley. The rumours have stemmed from a Twitter account called “AllAboutLeagueOne,” which was only formed last month and seems to exist to pull random transfer rumours from the back of the sofa. I’d encourage you to ignore anything they come up with for the rest of the transfer window and beyond.

There is so much wrong with this one. First of all, common wisdom is that it’d take a fee of at least £5 million to see Keillor-Dunn move this summer, something Argyle appear to have made clear they won’t spend given their dealings thus far in the window. Additionally, the account adds insult to injury by getting the player’s name wrong in their tweet. It’s a lesson to all: if you’re going to make up nonsense this summer, at least try to get some of the basics correct.

Confirmed: Talovierov signs for Stoke

05/07/25

Having become the club’s record signing near the end of the January transfer window, Maksym Talovierov has departed the club. The Ukrainian defender made 13 appearances for the Greens, scoring twice, including a memorable opener against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium back in March.

It always seemed likely that Talovierov would leave if Argyle were relegated and, once that relegation was confirmed, attention turned to his next destination. As it happens, the destination is a familiar one for ex-Argyle personnel: Stoke City. The Greens confirmed they’ve recouped the fee they paid for Talovierov with this deal, as well as obtaining a sell-on clause. Honestly, it’s probably the best business Argyle could have done in the circumstances.

Rumour: Goalkeeper Miller offered deal

04/07/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle have offered a contract to American goalkeeper Tyler Miller

Age: 32

Position: Goalkeeper

Last season: 0 appearances

Source: Argyle TV

Verdict: Following news that Plymouth Argyle have offered a contract to Ayman Benarous, head coach Tom Cleverley has announced a deal is on the table for another free agent. However, this time it was regarding a player no links had been made with beforehand: American goalkeeper Tyler Miller.

Miller has made 194 senior appearances across his career, with the vast majority coming in his homeland in MLS. More recently, he’s been on the books of Notts County; he signed a short-term deal at the back end of last season, but didn’t make an appearance for the League Two promotion chasers.

Again, just because a deal has been offered we can’t assume it will be signed. However, given Cleverley referred to it directly, he certainly sounds confident of getting his man. It’s also a blow to the reputation of Pete O’Rourke, who reported last week that Argyle were keen to sign Archie Mair as their backup goalkeeper, not Miller.

Update: Contract offered to Benarous

04/07/25

Giving updates in a press conference, Plymouth Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley has announced that the club have offered a contract to former Bristol City midfielder Ayman Benarous. The 21-year-old has been at Argyle on trial since the start of pre-season, and has clearly done enough to impress the management team at Home Park.

Of course, a contract being offered doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be signed. Given his injury record, Benarous may have been offered a deal with significant caveats on how much he’ll be paid if he does or doesn’t play, and negotiations are still ongoing at this stage. However, given this has come from Cleverley himself, this deal would appear closer than it’s ever been.

Update: O'Mahony set for Reading

04/07/25

After being linked to Plymouth Argyle a few days ago, the Greens have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Mark O’Mahony. The 20-year-old spent last season at Portsmouth, on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, and it was rumoured that host of League One clubs were looking to sign the player. Now Football League World, who initially broke the story, claim he’s about to move to Reading, with a medical potentially planned for next week.

Given Argyle were linked with O’Mahony alongside several League One clubs, they were never odds-on favourites to sign the player. It’s also possible that the Greens always preferred other targets, having already signed Owen Oseni and Bim Pepple and been heavily linked to Rumarn Burrell. Either way, I think we can write the O’Mahony deal off.

Confirmed: Argyle complete Pepple deal

04/07/25

It’s proving to be a busy day for confirmed transfer news at Plymouth Argyle. Callum Wright has left on loan, whilst Brendan Wiredu has signed for the Greens on a permanent deal. Now, the Greens have announced another permanent arrival, with Bim Pepple arriving from fellow League One side Luton Town.

Links to Pepple were first hinted at by PASOTI poster Skynet, though he wasn’t mentioned by name; whether Pepple is the man Skynet meant is ultimately unfalsifiable. However, rumours started to spread throughout the week, leading to Argyle accidentally announcing his arrival in an email sent to supporters. His signing was officially confirmed later in the day.

The fee for the transfer remains undisclosed. Online resource Transfermarkt seems to suggest Pepple signed for a six-figure sum, though I have yet to see this confirmed either way.

Confirmed: Wiredu joins for £300,000

04/07/25

It’s one out, one in for Plymouth Argyle so far today. After Callum Wright’s loan departure to Wigan Athletic earlier, the Greens have confirmed the arrival of Brendan Wiredu. The versatile 25-year-old joins on a permanent deal from Fleetwood Town, for a fee believed to be in the region of £300,000.

Links to Wiredu first came from Alan Nixon, who reported that Argyle were set to battle Rotherham United for his signature. In recent days, it became clear that Argyle were the frontrunners to secure their man. A fee was agreed, and the deal was announced earlier today. Strangely, Argyle’s signing announcement article doesn’t actually include any text at the time of writing, but rest assured: Wiredu’s ours.

Wiredu will wear the number 4 shirt during his stay at Home Park.

Rumour: Argyle enter Burrell chase

02/07/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are looking to sign Burton Albion striker Rumarn Burrell

Age: 24

Position: Striker

Last season: 11 goals and 2 assists in 34 appearances

Source: Football League World

Verdict: After completing a move for Owen Oseni, and with rumours suggesting a move is on the cards for Aribim Pepple, Plymouth Argyle appear to be continuing apace to add to their options up front for the forthcoming campaign. Now, reports suggest they’re in the market to sign another front man: Burton Albion’s Rumarn Burrell.

Burrell first joined the Brewers having been prolific for Cove Rangers in Scotland, and had a solid campaign. He scored 11 goals, whilst also scoring his first at international level for Jamaica, in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago. He’s still believed to have two years left on his deal at Burton, so would command a transfer fee, but we know Argyle have money in the bank to make a move possible.

The source here is an article in Football League World. They’re not always the most reliable, but have credit in the bank this season having been the first to report on Argyle’s interest in Oseni. They’ve put their neck on the line again, and it’ll be interesting to see if this deal comes off too.

Confirmed: Wright loaned to Wigan

04/07/25

Following Nathanael Ogbeta’s loan move to divisional rivals Barnsley, a similar move has been confirmed for another of Plymouth Argyle’s players. It’s another one out of the blue, with no rumours surrounding Callum Wright before his loan move to League One side Wigan Athletic was revealed this morning.

Wright played an important role in the second half of the season as Argyle won the League One title in 2022/23, but struggled to have a similar impact at Championship level. Many expected that he’d be able to shine at Argyle again in League One, but it’s clear that the new management team believe it to be best that his future lies elsewhere.

Given Wright only had a year left on his deal at Home Park, it’d be a surprise if we ever see him in an Argyle shirt again.

Rumour: O'Mahony linked on loan

01/07/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are one of a number of League One clubs looking to loan Brighton and Hove Albion’s Mark O’Mahony

Age: 20

Position: Striker

Last season: 4 goals in 14 appearances

Source: Football League World

Verdict: We’ve had all sorts of rumours surrounding incomings and outgoings at Plymouth Argyle over the last couple of months – just look at the depths of this page for evidence of that. However, each move has been a permanent deal thus far, and we haven’t had any rumours surrounding any potential loan deals. That was, until today.

Now, Argyle have been linked with a move for Mark O’Mahony. The Irishman, currently on the books of Brighton and Hove Albion, spent most of last season on loan at Portsmouth. He had a mixed record in the Championship, looking decent when he played but having his campaign hampered by injury. Now, it looks as though he’ll be resuming his career at League One level.

The reports have come from Football League World. I have some scepticism about their accuracy, but they were the first to link Argyle with a move for Owen Oseni, and clearly have some credit in the bank. However, it’s notable that they have linked O’Mahony to a host of clubs. Argyle are linked alongside Leyton Orient and Reading, whilst he could even line up on opening day at Home Park for the opposition, after further links with Barnsley.

Nothing to say this one is close to completion yet, but one to keep an eye on.

Rumour: Goalkeeper Mair to join

01/07/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are close to completing the signing of goalkeeper Archie Mair

Age: 24

Position: Goalkeeper

Last season: 2 appearances

Source: Football Insider

Verdict: It may not be the most exciting transfer in the world, but it appears Plymouth Argyle have found their backup goalkeeper. Dan Grimshaw departed for Norwich City last month, and it appears Argyle may be using their contacts at Carrow Road to source his replacement.

Archie Mair is the man in question, following the expiry of his contract at Norwich this summer. Scotland youth international Mair didn’t actually make a senior appearance for Norwich, but he’s had several loan smells at both EFL and National League level. Most recently, he featured twice at Motherwell during a loan move in the second half of last season.

Pete O’Rourke has reported this one, with a dedicated piece in Football Insider. O’Rourke wouldn’t risk his reputation reporting on a backup goalkeeper joining a League One club, so I suspect this is as close to done as possible without currently being announced.

Rumour: Talovierov to move to Stoke

01/07/25

Rumour: Stoke City are closing in on the signing of Plymouth Argyle defender Maksym Talovierov

Age: 25

Position: Centre back

Last season: 2 goals and 1 assist in 13 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: I’d say I’ve become tired of anyone of a Plymouth Argyle persuasion being linked with a move to Stoke City. However, this one always looked likely to happen – Maksym Talovierov was almost certain to leave Home Park this summer and, in many ways, his destination is irrelevant.

Talovierov first joined Argyle in January, and has left an impression despite only having made 13 appearances for the club. Most notably, he gave Argyle the lead in the FA Cup away at Manchester City, whilst also playing a key role as the Pilgrims defeated Liverpool. However, it’s always been rumoured that a relegation release clause featured in his contract and, upon that relegation, his departure felt like an inevitability.

The rumour has come from the Twitter account of Pete O’Rourke. As I’ve often said in the past, when he links a player to a specific club he carries a significant level of respectability. O’Rourke was, for example, the first mainstream journalist to confirm Adam Randell was moving to Bristol City. I don’t suspect this deal is done yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see it advance soon.

Confirmed: Bundu turns down new deal

26/06/25

It was rumoured right from the start of the transfer window, and today we’ve had official confirmation that Mustapha Bundu has rejected the offer of a new contract at Plymouth Argyle. Comments from his agent all but confirmed that Bundu would be resuming his career away from Home Park, and it’s now been announced that he’ll be playing in Germany as of next season.

Argyle’s announcement confirmed that Bundu would be joining a 2. Bundesliga side, leading many to conclude he’d be reunited with Miron Muslic at Schalke. However, that wasn’t to be, as his arrival was later announced by divisional rivals Hannover.

Bundu played a total of 70 games for Argyle, after arriving as a deadline day signing from Anderlecht in the summer of 2023, scoring 14 goals.

Rumour: Al Hajj to leave

30/06/25

Rumour: Rami Al Hajj will become the latest player to leave Plymouth Argyle this summer

Age: 23

Position: Attacking Midfielder

Last season: 3 goals in 29 appearances

Source: PASOTI

Verdict: You wait all summer for a concrete rumour to stem from PASOTI, and two come along at once. Following yesterday’s rumblings linking Plymouth Argyle with a move for Aribim Pepple, it’s now been claimed that Rami Al Hajj may be set for a move away from Home Park.

The Swedish attacking midfielder joined Argyle and deadline day last summer. Whilst he showed some flashes of quality, he struggled to nail down a place in the side under former head coach Miron Muslic. A spell in League One under Tom Cleverley looked to be the ideal way to reignite his Argyle career, but it looks increasingly likely that his time will be cut short.

The rumours stem from the PASOTI account of IJN. This time, it’s been deemed worthy of its own thread, possibly (definitely) connected to the fact that the IJN account belongs to Ian Newell, the site’s owner. Newell has, to put it diplomatically, got a few things wrong in the past. However, it’d be a surprise to see him put his reputation on the line without prior knowledge, and he claims two separate sources have told him Al Hajj is leaving. We’ll keep a close eye on this one.

Rumour: Argyle battle Rotherham for Wiredu

29/06/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle have joined Rotherham United in the race to sign Fleetwood Town’s Brendan Wiredu

Age: 25

Position: Central midfielder/defender

Last season: 2 goals in 37 appearances

Source: Alan Nixon

Verdict: This feels like one that has the potential to run for a while. Rotherham United were said to be in pole position to sign Fleetwood Town captain Brendan Wiredu. However, it’s now believed that Plymouth Argyle are interested in the player, and may lead the race for his signature.

The reports have come from Alan Nixon, and have been posted on his Patreon page. As I’ve said before, and no doubt will again, I will always have doubts about someone who makes people pay to see his transfer rumours. However, Nixon has got plenty right, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Argyle in for a player who has good EFL experience, and could be bought for a fee rumoured to be between £300,000-£400,000.

Argyle are said to have been interested in Wiredu before, and could look to pounce now they find themselves in League One. I don’t expect we’ll see this one resolved quickly, given the level of interest, but I’m absolutely convinced conversations have taken place.

Rumour: Argyle seek Pepple deal

29/06/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are looking to sign Luton Town striker Aribim Pepple

Age: 22

Position: Striker

Last season: 12 goals and 3 assists in 43 appearances (out on loan)

Source: PASOTI

Verdict: Plymouth Argyle have been linked with numerous strikers in recent weeks. Owen Oseni may have arrived from St Mirren, but there is still plenty of business to be done to ensure their strikeforce is up to scratch for the forthcoming League One campaign. Recently, the most serious rumours have surrounded Luton Town’s Aribim Pepple.

Pepple has had a couple of decent loan spells during the most recent campaign. He started off at Southend United in the National League, with his performances catching the eye of League Two Chesterfield, who loaned him in for the remainder of the campaign. Aged 22, he seems to fall into the Oseni bracket of players Argyle could look to sign from a lower level and work to improve as time progresses.

The rumour has stemmed from PASOTI poster “Skynet,” and I immediately have a couple of concerns. First of all, I’m not at all convinced of Skynet’s reliability. I feel I’m often told they get a lot right, but I’ve never seen it. I feel I first came across them when they said Graham Carey was set to move to a Championship team (he didn’t), and later they claimed Steven Schumacher was set to return to the club in January (he didn’t). Whoever is behind the account, in my view, clearly does a lot of guessing, and gets lucky every now and then.

Their post is also a little cryptic, and in my view contains plenty of plausible deniability. It doesn’t mention Pepple by name, but merely claims Argyle will be signing a striker who has played “all over the world.” That has led to people inferring it’s Pepple, but this is far from confirmed. Perhaps Argyle do hold some interest, but let’s wait and see how this one develops.

Rumour: Argyle in for Exeter's Richards

27/06/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle have offered a contract to Exeter City teenager Jake Richards

Age: 17

Position: Central midfielder

Last season: 2 goals and 3 assists in 20 appearances

Source: Various

Verdict: This may be one I have to shoot down, at least for the moment. Sorry in advance for being a bit of a killjoy.

Rumours have been circling on social media today that Plymouth Argyle have offered a contract to 17-year-old Exeter City midfielder Jake Richards. And it’d make sense – reports broke earlier that Argyle’s smaller neighbours had made an “historic” offer to keep him, but had thus far had no joy. Given what happened earlier this summer with Caleb Watts, that has led many to conclude Exeter are looking to soften the blow ahead of a move away, possibly to Devon’s finest.

Alas, the problem is I have seen no decent source claiming Argyle have made an offer. I sense some are seeing what happened to Watts, putting two and two together and coming up with five. I suspect others are simply joining in on the fun. Additionally, if Richards were to leave Exeter, would Argyle be at the front of the queue? He’s a 17-year-old who already has decent EFL experience, and surely clubs higher up the food chain will be taking notice.

I hope I’m wrong on this one; if Richards signs for Argyle this summer I may need to be hospitalised simply through laughter. Before that happens though, I’d like to hear at least something from a reputable source.

Rumour: Benarous joins on trial

27/06/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are looking to sign Ayman Benarous, and have taken him on trial

Age: 21

Position: Central midfielder

Last season: 0 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: This is a rumour that seems to have gathered pace throughout the day. After Owen Oseni’s permanent arrival was announced earlier, whispers started to spread that Ayman Benarous, recently released from Bristol City, was set to join him as a trialist.

I imagine news of this trial is fairly likely to be true. I haven’t been able to pin down a cast iron source – the best I’ve been able to find is from Bristol City account The Robins Zone, although it could well be that this is simply a news aggregator account, the likes of which you’ve no doubt come across when looking for information on Argyle. However, it does appear he was pictured at Home Park today, which seems to be very clear evidence that he’s at least being considered as a signing.

The idea of a trial would also naturally make sense from the club’s point of view. Benarous hasn’t played a competitive game for over three years. He suffered back-to-back ACL injuries, receiving a “big setback” in his recovery from the latter, whilst hamstring problems kept him out after he returned in pre-season. Argyle are sensible in looking to see if he’s still got it before making any potential move.

There are obviously two parts to this rumour. Is Benarous on trial with the Pilgrims? I reckon he almost certainly is. Does that mean he’ll eventually sign? Let’s wait and see.

Confirmed: Umm Salal loan Baidoo

29/06/25

Well wasn’t that bizarre? Michael Baidoo, Argyle’s record signing a matter of months ago before the arrival of Maksym Talovierov, has departed on loan after just half a season at Home Park. The Ghanaian international has signed for Qatari side Umm Salal on a season-long deal.

The deal became more curious by the fact that Umm Salal announced Baidoo’s arrival a day before Argyle announced his departure. The Pilgrims addressed this in their statement, saying “We are aware that Umm Salal announced Michael’s arrival, unilaterally, early on Saturday. At that stage, while talks were advanced, no agreement had been made, nor had any paperwork been signed. This has now finally been resolved, and the loan deal finalised on Sunday afternoon, so we are now able to share officially.”

Umm Salal are said to be paying a six-figure loan fee for Baidoo, and have the option to buy him at the end of his deal. However, given the player still has three years left on his Argyle contract, we clearly haven’t heard the end of the story.

Confirmed: Oseni signed for £60,000

27/06/25

Plymouth Argyle have confirmed the signing of striker Owen Oseni. The 22-year-old has joined from Scottish side St Mirren, for a fee believed to be £60,000.

Oseni only signed for St Mirren in January, after an impressive spell at National League Gateshead. He didn’t score a goal in Scotland, and the club now appear to have chosen to cut their losses, having originally signed him for £120,000. Argyle have taken a risk on the player and, given he cost relative pennies and becomes the only striker on the books currently, it could prove to be a risk worth taking.

Head coach Tom Cleverley was quoted as saying “It’s great to have Owen with us. His form with Gateshead shows that he is a player who knows where the goal is. He scored a variety of goals for them and is still at an age where he has a lot of potential for improvement. We think being with us at Argyle gives us a great opportunity to develop him as a player.”

Oseni will follow the likes of Finn Azaz, Ryan Hardie and Calum Dyson in wearing the number 18 shirt at Home Park.

Rumour: Baidoo to move to Qatar

22/06/25

Rumour: Michael Baidoo is set to leave Plymouth Argyle to join Qatar Stars League side Umm Salal

Age: 26

Position: Attacking midfielder

Last season: 13 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: This is a curious one. Michael Baidoo was conspicuous in his absence as Plymouth Argyle returned to pre-season training on Friday. The club later said he was away for personal reasons, following his wedding and the setting up of his foundation. Fair enough, I’d say. However, it may not turn out to be true, with rumours now linking him with a move away from the club.

This rumour has stemmed from the Twitter account of “Akooora,” who claim they are “dedicated to Qatari football news, including results, news, and transfers.” As someone who’ll tell anyone who’ll listen that he once spent a month in Qatar, I should perhaps be more familiar with Qatari media sources. Alas, I’m not, so I can’t vouch for the validity of the account or the report.

Other reports have come up since, but all seem to be piggybacking on the initial Akooora tweet. Because it would be a strange one for an account with over 10,000 followers to make up, I’m tempted to give them the benefit of the doubt for now. But let’s see how this one develops.

Confirmed: Ogbeta loaned to Barnsley

26/06/25

Here’s one that has come completely out of the blue. Plymouth Argyle left back Nathanael Ogbeta, who made 20 appearances for Argyle after joining on a free transfer last summer, has moved out on loan. He’s joined divisional rivals Barnsley on a deal until the end of the season.

Argyle actually play Barnsley on the opening day of the season, following the release of the fixture list earlier today. However, Ogbeta will be ineligible for the fixture as a loanee from the opposition.

Ogbeta had a tough start at Home Park under Wayne Rooney, but did manage to show glimpses of quality across his 20 games. Many may have thought that a spell in League One would help him develop at Home Park, but he’ll now be doing so elsewhere. I’m curious to see what that means for Argyle in the left back position, and whether this implies the club are confident of retaining the services of Bali Mumba.

Rumour: Argyle contact St Mirren over Oseni

24/06/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are keen on signing St Mirren striker Owen Oseni

Age: 22

Position: Striker

Last season: 12 goals and 1 assist in 35 appearances

Source: Football League World

Verdict: Plymouth Argyle need a striker. Ryan Hardie has been sold, Ben Waine released, and Mustapha Bundu seemingly unwilling to sign a new deal. A few forwards have been linked, and another of those rumours has surfaced today, with Irish striker Owen Oseni rumoured to be on the move from St Mirren.

Oseni only joined the Scottish side in January. Previously, he led the line for National League Gateshead, where he scored 12 goals in 24 games in the first half of the campaign. That led to St Mirren making a move for him, but he’s not started a game, or scored a goal, since his move north of the border. It wouldn’t necessarily be a surprise if they wanted to cut their losses.

Would Plymouth Argyle really be interested in such a player? Well, according to Football League World, Argyle are in talks with St Mirren and “keen to strike an agreement.” Unlike many Football League World articles, this one is an exclusive, and they’re putting their reputation on the line in the hope this one will come off. They seem fairly confident though, so let’s see how this develops.

Confirmed: Bristol City sign Randell

20/06/25

Following Ryan Hardie’s move to Wrexham on Monday, Plymouth Argyle have announced another painful departure to close out the week. This time it’s Adam Randell who, as was rumoured yesterday, has joined Championship side Bristol City.

Randell played 173 games at Argyle in all, but it’s gutting that he won’t be adding to that tally (at least, not for the foreseeable future). Due to another crazy relegation release clause in his contract, he leaves for a frankly derisory fee of around £750,000. He’s easily worth double that figure.

Randell leaves with the best wishes of most sane members of the Green Army, with the club’s own departure article saying “he is a superb professional and a true role model; a credit to Argyle’s Academy, and beyond.”

Confirmed: Amaechi joins on free transfer

19/06/25

Plymouth Argyle have made their fifth signing of the summer, and it’s another where there wasn’t a sniff of anything being announced beforehand. The man in question is Xavier Amaechi, who becomes Argyle’s first signing under Tom Cleverley following the expiry of his contract at 2. Bundesliga side FC Magdeburg.

A few rumblings, albeit not from any decent sources, were linking Argyle with a move for Tyreece John-Jules across the last couple of days. Thankfully in my view, that move hasn’t transpired. It’s very possible that people have been mixing up their 24-year-old Arsenal academy graduates, with Amaechi coming through at the same time as John-Jules.

Cleverley was quoted as saying “Xavier is a quick and exciting winger who will add further competition to our forward options. He has good European experience having played in Germany, and returns to England a more rounded player, but he is still young and has so much room for growth and development.”

Amaechi will wear the number 10 shirt during his time at Home Park.

Rumour: Randell set for Bristol City

19/06/25

Rumour: Bristol City are close to completing a deal for Plymouth Argyle’s Adam Randell

Age: 20

Position: Central midfielder

Last season: 1 goal and 3 assists in 43 appearances

Source: Football Insider

Verdict: Going into the transfer window following relegation, this was a piece of news we feared, and now it appears to be happening. Plymouth Argyle academy graduate Adam Randell now seems to be on his way out of Home Park.

From around January time, Randell was cautiously being linked with a move to Swansea City, with many of Argyle’s bogus “ITK” accounts claiming that he was likely to join the Swans this summer. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case, with reports in Football Insider today saying he’ll be moving to Westcountry rivals Bristol City. Football Insider’s reporting can be erratic, but they get more right than they don’t. And, when they link a player to a specific club rather than several suitors, the deal tends to get done.

Argyle, for their part, seem resigned to the fact that Randell will be departing. All the noises from the club are pointing to this one being announced sooner rather than later.

Rumour: Sonny Aljofree linked

17/06/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are looking to sign Manchester United’s Sonny Aljofree, son of former Argyle defender Hasney

Age: 20

Position: Centre back

Last season: 3 goals in 27 appearances (on loan at Accrington Stanley)

Source: Instagram

Verdict: There’d be a certain amount of romanticism surrounding this signing. Hasney Aljofree spent five years as a Plymouth Argyle player between 2002 and 2007, and he’s always been welcome back at the club ever since. Now, there are rumours swirling that his son, Sonny, could be in line to become a Pilgrim himself.

Aljofree Jr is currently on the books at Manchester United, much like his father was at youth level. He spent last year on loan at League Two Accrington Stanley, and it’d probably be fair to say a move to League One is the natural next step in his development as a 20-year-old. Without being disrespectful, Sonny is probably a fair way from making the grade in the Premier League, and that tallies with the rumour currently being a loan with an option to buy.

Now, to be honest I’m finding the rumour hard to judge. It’s stemmed from Hasney’s own Instagram account, where details of the rumour were shared along with the timeless “eyes emoji,” hinting that a deal may be imminent. That hasn’t stopped a load of other chancers claiming they’re the true source of the rumour though, with one in particular saying he “doesn’t do socials” (on a social media channel) and therefore couldn’t possibly have seen Hasney’s post before sharing the rumour hours later. Of course, mate. Of course.

I’m not sure what to make of this. Hasney may have some genuine insight into his son’s transfer movements, he may have no idea at all, or he may just be having a bit of fun. We’ll keep an eye on this one, but I don’t anticipate anything imminent.

Verdict: Plymouth Argyle have been busy in the transfer market, with four players already signed ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. However, up until now the striker position has remained untouched. However, rumours today suggest that may be about to change.

Pete O’Rourke has mentioned that the Greens are in the hunt for Portsmouth striker Christian Saydee. He didn’t have the best goalscoring record in the Championship last season, and it’s been suggested that he may look to drop down to League One this summer. O’Rourke initially put the rumour out simply as a tweet, but does now seem to have dedicated an article to it, giving it just a hint more believability.

Argyle are rumoured to be interested alongside Wigan Athletic, with both loan and permanent transfers on the table. And this is where Argyle’s status as a big fish in League One could aid them. Given the respective budgets, and the season ambitions of the two clubs, Argyle are surely more of an attractive prospect than Wigan at the moment. We should soon find out whether Saydee agrees.

Confirmed: Wrexham sign Hardie

16/06/25

Following links to a striker earlier today in Christian Saydee, Plymouth Argyle have announced the departure of one of their own forwards. And it’s a big one too, with Ryan Hardie leaving the club to join big-spending Championship side Wrexham.

Hardie first joined Argyle in the winter transfer window of 2019/20. Initially on loan, the deal was made permanent around a year later. He made 248 appearances overall, scoring 74 goals and providing 23 assists, giving him an outstanding total of 97 goal contributions. Following Argyle’s relegation, he’s opted to remain in the Championship with Wrexham, joining for an undisclosed fee believed to be, rather unsatisfactorily, limited to a six-figure sum.

Announcing his departure, Argyle commented that “Hardie has been a likeable, reliable presence for the whole of Argyle’s recent era, and rightfully became a big fans’ favourite.” Given how quickly Wrexham burn through strikers, who knows whether our paths will cross again?

Update: Saydee signs for Wigan

19/06/25

Rumours earlier in the window were linking Plymouth Argyle with a move for Portsmouth’s Christian Saydee. That isn’t really a surprise, with Argyle having no genuine strikers on the books since Ryan Hardie’s move to Wrexham. However, Argyle have missed out on this one, with Saydee announced as a Wigan Athletic player today.

The player was linked with both Argyle and Wigan a few days ago, and Argyle are clearly the better draw in terms of budget and season ambitions. However, Saydee could have a number of reasons for choosing Wigan. He’s been given a three-year deal, which Argyle may not have offered, he may be in line for more playing time, and the age-old geographic factor may have played a role.

Regardless of the reasons, Argyle will now need to move on to other targets.

Confirmed: Grimshaw sold to Norwich

06/06/25

After rumours started to swirl around a week ago, Plymouth Argyle have confirmed the departure of goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw. The 27-year-old made 24 appearances last season, 22 of them for Argyle, and kept a solitary clean sheet against Portsmouth in November.

Grimshaw was the first-choice goalkeeper under Wayne Rooney, but lost his place to Conor Hazard when Miron Muslic arrived. Grimshaw’s distribution may have served Argyle’s new head coach, whoever that may be, better. However, with this deal rumoured to be worth the same £600,000 fee the Greens paid Blackpool for his services, this move probably suits all parties.

Confirmed: Ibrahim joins permanently

04/06/25

Recent rumours have been confirmed, and Plymouth Argyle have made their fourth signing of the summer. It’s the first of those signings to command a transfer fee, with Bradley Ibrahim joining from 2. Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin on a permanent deal.

Another midfielder, Ibrahim started his academy journey at Queens Park Rangers, before moving into the Arsenal youth setup in 2017. He wouldn’t make a senior appearance, and departed England entirely for Berlin in 2024. On deadline day last summer he returned, joining Crawley Town on a season-long loan. Now, he’s back in England for good, with Argyle paying a reported £250,000 to secure his services.

In Ibrahim’s unveiling article, head of football operations David Fox said “I am very pleased that Bradley has agreed to join us. He is someone we identified during last season with the profile of being strong, powerful, a good tackler, and at an age where he is improving rapidly.”

Rumour: Grimshaw linked with Norwich

02/06/25

Rumour: Norwich City have agreed a £600,000 fee for Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw

Age: 27

Position: Goalkeeper

Last season: 1 clean sheet in 24 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: We’ve had plenty of talk surrounding potential incomings in recent days, and now it appears we need to talk about a potential departure from Plymouth Argyle.

If reports are to be believed, goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw is set to leave the club. Rumours are circulating that Argyle have agreed a fee of around £600,000 with Norwich City. Grimshaw joined Argyle for the same fee from Blackpool last summer, but he lost his place to Conor Hazard after Miron Muslic’s arrival as head coach. Given Norwich have no goalkeepers on the books at present, and they offer Grimshaw the chance to remain in the Championship, this move seems to make sense for all parties.

The source here is a Twitter account by the name of Anthony Joseph. He’s employed by Sky Sports and, whilst this rumour seems only worthy of a tweet rather than a standalone article, he clearly has connections. It’d be a strange rumour to just make up with his reputation at stake, so I think we can at least say with certainty that Norwich’s interest is genuine.

With Muslic gone, Grimshaw may have had another shot at regaining the number one jersey. However, I think Argyle would jump at the chance to break even on a transfer that hasn’t really worked out thus far. We can safely place this one in the “more likely than not” category.

Rumour: Fulton interest rekindled

01/06/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are looking to complete a move for Swansea City midfielder Jay Fulton

Age: 23

Position: Wing back

Last season: 1 goal in 34 appearances

Source: Alan Nixon

Verdict: If you feel like you’ve gone back in time, I’ll forgive you. With the transfer window set to slam shut in January, Plymouth Argyle were being linked with a late move for Swansea City’s Jay Fulton. Now, it appears they’re looking to reignite that interest ahead of the 2025/26 League One campaign.

The rumour stems from Alan Nixon’s Patreon page. I will admit I have my doubts about Nixon, and always will about someone who makes people pay to see his transfer rumours, but he undeniably has knowledge, and tends to get more right than he gets wrong. Recently, he’s started to resemble “Slow Sports News” by reporting rumours that most of us had already heard weeks prior. I suppose I can’t rule of the possibility of him only picking up January’s news in recent days, but even I’ll admit that’s unlikely.

Nixon reports that this deal could be dependant on Swansea’s pursuit of Lincoln City’s Ethan Erhahon. If they complete that signing, Fulton may be allowed to leave, with Argyle seemingly first in the queue. So, there are still some hurdles

Rumour: MacKenzie set to join Argyle

25/05/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are to sign Aberdeen’s Jack MacKenzie on a free transfer

Age: 25

Position: Left back

Last season: 1 goal and 4 assists in 34 appearances

Source: Alan Nixon

Verdict: It appears almost certain that Plymouth Argyle are about to complete their third signing of the summer…and the domestic season still hasn’t concluded. Jack MacKenzie, a left back currently playing for Aberdeen, looks set to join the Greens as a free agent upon the expiry of his contract.

The news was reported by Alan Nixon this morning. However, it was actually initially reported exactly a month ago in a Daily Record article. They claimed that Argyle were keen on the player even before their relegation was confirmed, and it now seems that the deal has taken a step closer to completion.

All outlets, reputable or otherwise, now appear to have jumped on the bandwagon. I’d expect this one to be announced sooner rather than later.

Confirmed: Argyle complete MacKenzie deal

30/05/25

Following rumours first circulating at the end of April, Plymouth Argyle have confirmed the signing of Jack MacKenzie. The Scottish left back joins as a free agent from Aberdeen, signing a three-year deal at Home Park.

It had looked highly likely for a while that MacKenzie was set to become Argyle’s third summer signing. There had been rumblings that the deal may collapse following the sudden departure of Miron Muslic, but those proved to be unfounded, with MacKenzie being announced as an Argyle player this afternoon.

Head of football operations David Fox was quoted as saying “We see Jack as a very versatile player. He is able to play in multiple positions, and his adaptability and commitment were something we highlighted very early on in our recruitment of him. He is getting some well-earned rest at the moment, and will join us for the start of our pre-season campaign next month.”

Rumour: Argyle lead Ibrahim chase

01/06/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are competing to complete the signing of Hertha Berlin’s Bradley Ibrahim

Age: 20

Position: Central midfield

Last season: 2 goals in 38 appearances

Source: Football League World

Verdict: Fresh from signing two midfield players in Jamie Paterson and Caleb Watts, Plymouth Argyle appear to be after another. This time it’s Bradley Ibrahim, a former Arsenal youngster currently of Hertha Berlin, who spent last season on loan at Crawley Town.

The source here is Football League World, and the rumour appears to have taken a step in the right direction today. Initial reports around a fortnight ago suggested that Argyle were in the frame to sign the player, but faced competition from the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic and Peterborough United. However, today’s reports go further, suggesting that whilst those sides retain interest, Argyle are set to beat them to secure Ibrahim’s services.

There are still a couple of caveats. Ibrahim is still under contract at Hertha Berlin, meaning he’d be the first signing at Argyle this summer to command a transfer fee. That could slow down a potential deal. A brief look over his numbers suggests he’s a player who fits Miron Muslic’s style of football, and Muslic’s exit could jeopardise a move. However, that wasn’t the case for Jack MacKenzie, so I’m now of the view this transfer is more likely than not to come off.

Rumour: Middlesbrough keen on Mumba

24/05/25

Rumour: Middlesbrough are keen to reignite their interest in Plymouth Argyle’s Bali Mumba

Age: 23

Position: Wing back

Last season: 3 assists in 37 appearances

Source: EFL Analysis

Verdict: It’s been an exciting few days of incomings at Plymouth Argyle, with Jamie Paterson and Caleb Watts signing as free agents on Friday. However, the reality of Argyle’s relegation is that we should also expect some notable departures this summer. Today, rumours started to circle around Bali Mumba.

The rumblings started on a website by the name of EFL Analysis. To be honest, it’s not a site I’m wholly familiar with, but they do seem to have got a sizable scoop by interviewing well-respected transfers journalist Graeme Bailey. Bailey spoke about Middlesbrough’s full back search, and planted the idea that they may look to make a move for Mumba this summer.

Quoting directly, Bailey said “I know one player who Middlesbrough do like is Bali Mumba. They had a look at him in January as well when they did the Morgan Whittaker deal. A former Sunderland player, but a very good player. I wouldn’t be surprised if they bring him in. I know they still like him. It wouldn’t surprise me if he emerges as a target once again.”

Now, obviously this is still at an early stage. I’m not suggesting a deal is imminent, and Bailey only hints at interest rather than a potential move. However, I think it’s undeniable that there will be moves made for Mumba this summer, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Middlesbrough were involved.

Confirmed: Watts joins for free

23/05/25

It was rumoured earlier today, and now the news is official: Plymouth Argyle have completed the signing of Caleb Watts. The 23-year old signs for the Greens on a three-year deal, having rejected the offer of a new deal at Exeter City.

Watts played for Southampton at academy level, which included loan spells at Crawley Town and Morecambe, before moving to Exeter. Having impressed in the second half of that season, it became clear that he had outgrown the club. Argyle swooped, giving the player the ideal platform to further his career.

Head coach Miron Muslic claimed Watts’ arrival will improve competition in the midfield positions, whilst head of football operations David Fox described him as “energetic midfield player who can get up and down the pitch.”

Rumour: Argyle raid Exeter for Watts

23/05/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are set to raid Devon rivals Exeter City to sign midfielder Caleb Watts

Age: 23

Position: Midfielder

Last season: 4 goals and 4 assists in 37 appearances

Source: Various

Verdict: Right, this one has been doing the rounds today. It could well be a case of people putting two and two together and coming up with five, but I’m happy to join them, because this deal would be absolutely hilarious.

Speculation started when Exeter City announced that Caleb Watts had rejected an offer to extend his contract at the club. This wasn’t a standard announcement; they were seething. At the end, they were claiming they were “disappointed he has decided not to repay the commitment and faith shown to him during his time at the club.” Bless.

With the Grecians being so publicly angry, there has been speculation that Watts could be on his way to Argyle. After all, would Exeter be so irked if Watts was joining a random League One club in the north of the country? Maybe – believe it or not, I struggle to put myself into the mind of those of an Exeter persuasion – but I doubt it.

We’ll find out soon on this one. With Exeter confirming that Watts is set to join another League One club, Argyle have at least a one in 23 chance of being his next destination. Though, perhaps foolishly, I get the feeling the odds are a little better than that.

Confirmed: Paterson becomes first summer signing

23/05/25

Despite not a single so-called “in the know” even hinting at it, Plymouth Argyle have completed their first signing of the summer. Jamie Paterson is the man arriving, signing from Championship side Coventry City upon the expiry of his contract.

Aged 33, Paterson has a wealth of experience across the EFL. His longest spells came with Walsall, Bristol City and Swansea City. He signed for Coventry as a free agent back in February, where he went on to make eight Championship appearances as his side made the play-offs.

Head coach Miron Muslic was quoted as saying “I am very happy that we have acted quickly to make our first signing of the summer. I spoke to Jamie on a video call last week and I think his character and experience will fit in perfectly in our locker room. He can play in a variety of positions along the front line, and will complement the way we want to play next season.”

Rumour: Talovierov to depart

08/05/25

Rumour: Maksym Talovierov is being linked with Turkish club Trabzonspor, and has interest from Championship sides

Age: 24

Position: Centre back

This season: 2 goals and 1 assist in 13 appearances

Source: Fotospor.com

Verdict: Following relegation, the vultures have begun to circle, and it appears their first target is Argyle’s Ukrainian centre back Maksym Talovierov. The 24-year-old, who only joined Argyle himself at the end of January, has been linked with a number of sides in this country and beyond.

The main report here appears to come from Turkish publication Fotospor. They’ve been linking the player to Trabzonspor, who also happen to have several other Ukrainians on their books. However, the article also links the centre back to Championship sides Derby County and Wrexham, backing up rumours circulating on social media in recent days.

Despite Talovierov being a relatively new arrival at Home Park, Argyle will probably be able to do little about his departure. It’s long been mooted that his arrival came with a relegation release clause; indeed, the Fotospor article refers to one when discussing the player’s next destination. If that’s activated, it’s up to Talovierov whether he opts to leave. It’s suggested that Sport.Ua reporting says he’s “seriously considering leaving,” although I’ve scoured the site and can’t find any evidence of this claim.

Talovierov will always be famous at Argyle for opening the scoring at the Etihad back in March. However, it’s possible his stay at Home Park could prove as fleeting as that of fellow centre back Nikola Katic, who was only ever here on loan.

Retained list announced

08/05/25

Plymouth Argyle have announced their retained list at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season. With most players under contract for next season, there hasn’t been as much announced as we’re perhaps used to seeing. However, we’ve had it confirmed that Ben Waine and Saxon Earley, as well as academy graduates Will Jenkins Davies and Josh Bernard, will leave the club at the end of their current deals.

Argyle have also confirmed that Jordan Houghton, Mustapha Bundu and Jack Matthews are out of contract. All three have been offered deals to remain at Home Park.

It has also been announced that all five loanees on Argyle’s books have returned to their parent clubs. That doesn’t necessarily mean Argyle can’t or won’t make a move for them to rejoin – exactly the same happened last summer with Darko Gyabi – but as of now there has been no movement.

The retained list in full is as follows:

Under contract: Bali Mumba, Nathanael Ogbeta, Julio Pleguezuelo, Kornel Szucs, Joe Edwards, Ryan Hardie, Callum Wright, Malachi Boateng, Adam Randell, Conor Hazard, Brendan Galloway, Rami Al Hajj, Matthew Sorinola, Michael Baidoo, Daniel Grimshaw, Zak Baker, Caleb Roberts, Freddie Issaka, Maksym Talovierov and Victor Palsson

Out of contract and offered new terms: Jordan Houghton, Mustapha Bundu and Jack Matthews

Released: Ben Waine, Saxon Earley, Will Jenkins Davies and Josh Bernard

Loanees returning to parent clubs: Michael Obafemi (Burnley), Darko Gyabi (Leeds United), Nikola Katic (FC Zurich), Muhamed Tijani (Slavia Prague) and Tymoteusz Puchacz (Holstein Kiel).

Winter transfer window closed
Rumour: Argyle seek free Mackenzie signing

25/04/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are looking to sign Aberdeen’s Jack MacKenzie on a free transfer

Age: 25

Position: Left back

This season: 1 goal and 4 assists in 32 appearances

Source: Daily Record

Verdict: Have you missed this? I’m not sure I have. After a relatively peaceful couple of months since the January transfer window slammed shut, the rumour mill now appears to be getting into gear ahead of the summer.

Late yesterday, the first rumour of the forthcoming window surfaced, linking Plymouth Argyle with a move for Aberdeen left back Jack MacKenzie. An on the face of it, the rumour seems fairly sound. It’s been reported in the Daily Record by journalist Scott Burns, so it’s not the sort of rumour that has stemmed from a random Twitter account. And the player himself is out of contract at the end of the season.

An initial look would suggest Aberdeen fans aren’t particularly fussed about MacKenzie’s reported departure, even though it’s been rumoured that he was offered a new deal at Pittodrie. Still, with Argyle set to play in League One next season, they are more of a beggar than a chooser in some markets, and we shouldn’t be too surprised that they’re looking to make cheap additions.

I’m taken by the fact that only Argyle have been linked with the player. When a player’s future is up in the air, we usually hear rumours of several clubs keen on their services. Only Argyle being reported suggests to me that they lead the race for MacKenzie’s signature.

I’m not necessarily expecting a speedy resolution. Yes, with Scotland technically counting as “abroad,” Argyle could already approach the player directly, but they’re still not 100% sure which league they’ll be in next season. When they are, I’d expect to see further movement on this one.

Confirmed: Argyle complete Boateng deal

03/02/25

Following a flurry of deadline day rumours, Plymouth Argyle have announced the arrival of central midfielder Malachi Boateng. The 22-year-old arrives at Home Park from Scottish side Heart of Midlothian, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Argyle have been hunting for a midfielder for much of the window, with several moves not coming to fruition for all sorts of reasons. However, Argyle finally have their new addition, with 30 minutes before the transfer deadline.

Head coach Miron Muslic was quoted as saying “Malachi provides further strength in depth to the squad but also fits the profile of player we are trying to sign perfectly. He is tall, athletic and physical and complements the style of play I am trying to implement here at Argyle.”

Whilst this hasn’t absolutely been confirmed, we assume this is the final piece of business Argyle will complete in the transfer window.

Rumour: Argyle fail in Camara move

03/02/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle have failed in a move for French midfielder Etienne Camara

Age: 21

Position: Central Midfielder

This season: 1 assist in 18 appearances

Source: Twitter/X

Verdict: Well, I suppose this is a major pitfall when you leave things to the last minute. It has been reported today that Plymouth Argyle had looked to make a move for Etienne Camara, of Belgian side Charleroi, but the move has collapsed due to his current side fearing they won’t be able to replace him in time.

In theory, there are plenty of reasons why Argyle may be interested in the player. They’ve been looking for a new midfielder for months, and Camara currently plays his club football in Belgium, meaning he’ll be very familiar to Argyle coach Miron Muslic. Indeed, the report stated he was convinced by Muslic to join Argyle, before his club blocked the move. The source here is solid too; it’s come from the Twitter account of Sacha Tavolieri, a journalist covering Belgian football with over 100,000 followers. He’d have no reason to make this up.

It seems surprising that Charleroi have blocked the move for such a reason, given that Camara has only played 19 minutes since the end of November. Still, that appears to be the case. Can the deal be rekindled? Maybe, but if it is I imagine it’ll be in the next transfer window, similar to what we saw with Michael Baidoo’s move from Elfsborg.

Rumour: Argyle seek Boateng transfer

03/02/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are seeking a permanent deal for Heart of Midlothian midfielder Malachi Boateng

Age: 22

Position: Central Midfielder

This season: 2 assists in 28 appearances

Source: Plymouth Live

Verdict: Another to have stemmed from Chris Errington’s live blog on Plymouth Live today. After a disappointing update regarding Adrian Zeljkovic earlier, this could prove to be much better news for the Green Army on deadline day.

Plymouth Argyle have been linked with a move for midfielder Malachi Boateng. The 22-year-old is the younger brother of former Argyle midfielder Hiram, and currently plays for Hearts in the Scottish top flight. Argyle are seeking a permanent deal for the player, who could become the first midfielder Argyle have actively bought for many years.

I’m interested to see here how a potential deal could be structured. Boateng only joined Hearts permanently in August 2024, and is believed to have a significant period of time remaining on his contract. I can’t imagine Argyle would be able to get this one done cheaply, but thus far we have no reliable information as to what the potential fee could be.

It’s just “interest” at this point. No suggestion that a deal has been agreed, and no suggestion that anything is particularly imminent. But when Errington speaks, we listen; I’m certainly of the view right now that a move here is more likely than not.

Rumour: Leonard on Argyle radar

02/02/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are keen to sign Blackburn Rovers forward Harry Leonard on loan

Age: 21

Position: Striker

This season: 1 goal in 10 appearances

Source: The Sun

Verdict: Another rumour to stem from Alan Nixon this morning. Well, from The Sun officially, but in an article by Nixon. However, unlike the potential Jay Fulton deal, there are a number of hurdles here making me feel a move is unlikely.

Plymouth Argyle have been linked with a move for Blackburn Rovers striker Harry Leonard. I can see why the Greens would be interested in the 21-year-old. They’re probably still in the market for a forward, despite Ryan Hardie’s heroic double against West Bromwich Albion, and Leonard has impressed me in the limited times I’ve seen him play.

There’s a reason I’ve only seen him on limited occasions though: injuries. For a man of just 21, Leonard has been incredibly unlucky on the injury front, allowing him just a handful of appearances in recent months. There are even rumours that he’s suffered a recurrence of a back injury in recent days; if that’s even remotely serious, it’d surely scupper any potential move before the transfer deadline.

Even if Leonard is passed fit for a transfer, Argyle aren’t believed to be the only club interested. As such, I’d be very surprised if this one ended up going through.

Rumour: Argyle seek Fulton loan

02/02/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are looking to complete a loan deal for Swansea midfielder Jay Fulton

Age: 30

Position: Central Midfielder

This season: 1 goal in 19 appearances

Source: Alan Nixon

Verdict: Plymouth Argyle’s attempts to bring in a central midfielder before Monday evening’s transfer deadline have taken another turn. Several options have been linked with a move to Home Park, with a deal for Adrian Zeljkovic seemingly collapsing due to work permit issues, and Fredrik Hammar turning down a transfer after Wayne Rooney’s departure. Now, Argyle seem to have turned their attentions to Swansea City’s Jay Fulton.

Reports from Alan Nixon this morning suggest Argyle are looking to sign the 30-year-old on a loan deal. It’s short on details (or at least it is for non-Patreon subscribers like myself), but Nixon has a decent track record in this window so far. It’s almost certain that Argyle at the very least have interest in the player.

Will that progress to a deal? I can see why Swansea may sanction the move. Fulton has scored once (funnily enough, against Argyle) in 19 appearances this season, but he’s been a squad player at best, playing a full 90 minutes just once. However, it does feel a little odd when you consider the Swans have just lost key midfielder Matt Grimes to Coventry City, and they surely wouldn’t sanction another departure without adequate provisions.

We’ll see on this one. I believe in Argyle’s interest, and I’m sure they’ll do all they can to get the deal over the line. Let’s see if Swansea allow it to happen.

Update: Zeljkovic deal off the table

03/02/25

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle are not interested in pursuing a deadline day deal for Adrian Zeljkovic

Age: 22

Position: Central Midfielder

This season: 1 assist in 21 appearances

Source: Plymouth Live

Verdict: A few days ago, you may remember some breaking news regarding Plymouth Argyle’s chase of Slovenian midfielder Adrian Zeljkovic. It was rumoured that Argyle had agreed a deal to bring in the player, but it had failed due to work permit issues. With Ibrahim Cissoko’s departure supposedly freeing up a slot for another foreign player to join, there had been a thought that this could rekindle a deal for Zeljkovic. However, it would now appear that this one has been fully put to bed.

The news came as a result of a live blog by Plymouth Live’s ever reliable Chris Errington this morning. In the blog, he touched upon Argyle’s potential interest in Zeljkovic, but confirmed he does not expect any movement before the transfer deadline. He actually went a little futher, claiming that Zeljkovic never was a player Argyle were keen on. Whether this is clever wording, or Argyle trying to save face, I guess we’ll never know, but it does seem to kill this one stone dead.

Don’t take my “one star” review here as an indication of how I feel about Errington’s reporting – I absolutely believe what he has to say. Rather, it’s a reflection of my suspicions that Argyle’s chances of signing Zeljkovic today are virtually nil.

Update: Forest keen on Finn

03/02/25

Rumour: Nottingham Forest are showing an interest in Plymouth Argyle youngster Tegan Finn

Age: 16

Position: Winger

This season: 4 appearances

Source: Football insider

Verdict: One of those that is more of an update on what we’ve seen in the past. You may recall earlier in the window that Plymouth Argyle’s teenage sensation Tegan Finn was being linked with a move to the Premier League. The same reporter who broke the initial story, Pete O’Rourke, now claims that the side in pole position to secure his signature is Nottingham Forest.

This would very much be seen as a development signing for Forest. Given Finn has only made four league appearances during his time at Argyle, he’s got no real prospect of featuring immediately for a side who are, let’s not forget, in a position to secure Champions League football next season. However, given Finn’s potential, it makes complete sense that a team with such ambitions would be interested in a move for the future.

I’m surprised that O’Rourke has described this as a “late move” in the transfer window. Given Finn is still on a youth contract, this surely isn’t a deal that would have to be concluded before tonight’s deadline. However, in the main O’Rourke does carry plenty of reliability, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we heard more on this sooner rather than later.

Rumour: Blackpool keen on Grimshaw return

02/02/25

Rumour: Blackpool are keen to bring goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw back to the club

Age: 27

Position: Goalkeeper

This season: 1 clean sheet in 24 appearances

Source: Alan Nixon

Verdict: Alan Nixon has been a busy boy this morning. I can certainly see some merit in his links between the Pilgrims and Swansea City midfielder Jay Fulton, whilst a move for Harry Leonard feels a little less likely. This one, regarding a potential outgoing, feels as though it falls somewhere in between.

Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw has been linked with a move back to Blackpool. Argyle, of course, signed Grimshaw from Blackpool for £600,000 back in August. After a strong start, he struggled for form, and it’s now widely accepted that Conor Hazard has taken back the number one spot following the arrival of Miron Muslic as head coach. As such, it may not be too much of a surprise if Grimshaw is keen on a departure.

Could all sides be keen to make this happen? Well, possibly. If Argyle can limit their losses on the fee they paid, I see no reason why they wouldn’t sanction a deal. Grimshaw would probably be keen on a move, so the ball would probably be in Blackpool’s court. They’re in the market for a goalkeeper, but right now it appears their first choice would be former Wycombe Wanderers ‘keeper Max Stryjek.

If they can’t get the Stryjek deal over the line, or a move for Grimshaw becomes more appealing, don’t be surprised if we see more on this one.
