Plymouth Argyle learned this evening that they will face Charlton Athletic in the first round of this season’s FA Cup.
In a draw conducted by former Norwich (amongst others) striker Grant Holt, it was confirmed that the Pilgrims will be the away side in the tie, meaning the game will be played at The Valley on the weekend of 7th/8th November.
It’ll be the first competitive meeting between the sides since 2018/19, when Argyle were defeated 2-0 at Home Park on their way to relegation from League One. The two sides will also meet at The Valley in the league on Boxing Day.
Argyle will be looking to reach the third round for the first time since the 2016/17 season, when they held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield. That followed wins against Mansfield in the first round and a dramatic extra time victory over Newport in the second.
Last season, the Greens beat Bolton Wanderers away from home to secure a second round tie against Bristol Rovers. Then a division below their fellow Westcountry opponents, Argyle took Rovers to a replay after a 1-1 draw away from home, but were knocked out after a highly unfortunate 1-0 defeat at Home Park.
There are no replays in the FA Cup this year, so the tie will have to be settled on the day.
